Another OEM transmission bites the dust
My wife gave her near-immaculate 2002 RX AWD to her 34 year old son a few months back.
Honestly, I didn't want it staying in the family because I didn't want to know how it was going to be abused.
Well...I know.
Bonehead put, after I wrote a page and a half of notes/instructions/DON'T DO <THIS>, what he claims was a quarter of a cup, i.e., two ounces, of transmission fluid in her. I said, "you mean 'quart', right, because I've ingested two ounce of transmission oil in my life, and you're not adding that much.
Oh...yeah...maybe it was.
IOW, he put in a full quart, and that car was 100% SPOT ON when it left our garage. It does not leak or consume anything it should not.
So...on the way to Alabama from South Texas, at 85 MPH, after 9 hours of 100-105F, sure enough, Princess lunches her transmission. 145-147K, about.
I should have said DO. NOT. OPEN. THE. HOOD. FOR. TEN THOUSAND MILES.
/facepalm
Of course, he was taken by the place which swapped a used transmission, and charged him $1,500 for labor, alone.
"But it's AWD, that costs more..."
Dude, it's a driveshaft...not more than ten extra minutes, if that.

Well, I know that overfilling the tranny is not good but I doubt that was the sole cause of the failure. I suspect it was getting ready to take a dump and the overfilling may (or may not) have accelerated the process.
But, yes, a warning "DO NOT OPEN HOOD....... EVER!" might not be out of order.
