I was driving home on the freeway and accelerated to pass another car. When I stepped on the gas pedal a bit hard I heard a loud popping sound. The popping sound only happened once. Shortly after I was exiting the freeway and noticed some white smoke coming from underneath my hood and I could smell a bit of a chemical mixture inside my car. Since I was in the middle of the road I couldn't pull over to check underneath the hood. I drove home slowly the rest of the way and when I got home, I popped open my hood to check for damage. There was none that I could see visibly. The smoke appears to have cleared as well. What could have caused the loud popping noise and should I take my car to the mechanic right away?
