well, the damn canister was not flooded.....dry as can be when I pulled it off today.

I went ahead and swapped out the junkyard mass air for a ebay mass air. Runs great right now. About to go top off the tank.

MAF interacting with level of gas in the tank

The only correlation is fuel delivery problem. I know you will get a code, but if the trouble returns, un cap the gas tank.

ok, first codes were p0171, p1150, p1155.

Todays codes are p0125, p0171, p1150, p1153, p1155 ....before topping off the tank.

Pleased to report that the running like crap did not return when I topped off with 3 clicks.

Also, there is something behing the dash doing a whole lot of "clicking" and squeeking. It kinda sounds like relays or solenoids firing. Is this normal? What is it?

There are two servos "air mix servo" & "mode servo" that usually are the cause of that sound. Could be one or both. https://www.clublexus.com/forums/rx-...mix-servo.html https://www.clublexus.com/forums/rx-...-cold-air.html

Glad to know the clicking is not the ECU frying......

I will order an O2 sensor and then see where I am.

Not 100% sure exactly what it was that made it act possessed. I changed O2 sensors, ignition coils, spark plugs, mass air, and upper intake gasket....and cleaned the EGR. It has been running great since.

You may had more than one failing or dying part causing a symphony of misfires and codes and aggrevation. haha
I see this often on complicated machines when doing my job.

I had 440 code pop up and i replaced my gas evap canister, the engine light came on my vsc light came and the abs light came on. I cleared the codes so far
the lights are staying off. She got 199107 on the clock. Repair list new power steering pump,/ rack. New ac system kyb shocks and mounts for off roading
rebuilt trans with hardend plantary gears welded. Performace brakes by akibono pro pads and drilled slotted rotors. Had a lot of engine work
bigger injectors flow thru exhaust stainless steel new motor controls for ac system. Reamain seal new altenator . I spent a lot money on the old gal
but i plan to keep for several more years. When i take her off road over rocks small logs and mud with only 2 wheel drive she is like a bulldozer .
What a great suv to have built like a tank 2001 rx300.

Hi Bill,
I like to hear more about your journey with performance mods.
This is worthy of a new thread in my opinion.

Greetings,
I've had the same problem with my 2001 RX 300. Mine didn't start until after I replaced the gas tank. Before it was replaced, I never experienced any issue with it running rough after I filled it up with gas. But after I replaced the tank I did. For about the first 4 or 5 miles, it will run rough, cough, sputter, hesitate, won't idle, doesn't want to accelerate, ect... After that it clears up and acts like it should. When I replaced the tank I reused the sensors. I cleaned them up good before I put them back in. One thing I notice that I thought was a little odd is that the rear (back side) of the tank is higher than the front end. Some of the sensor are mounted in the lower front end of the tank. Two of these sensors had check valves in them. What I think is that, these sensor are below the full fill level of the tank. And are therefore submerged in gas when the tank has been filled . And that the sensor with the check valves in them. Might not be sealing up all the way. And allowing raw gas to be sucked up thru them and into the EVAP system. Until the time that they either seal or are no longer submerged.
Smallcastle
PS A couple of things I forgot to mention. I replaced the fill tube when I replaced the tank. The other is that changing a fuel tank out in one of these is a real pain in the keister. Especially when trying to get the fill hose back on the tank neck.
