Question RX 300 keys - Key gods please help!

I just bought a 2000 RX from a non-Lexus dealer. I only received 1 VALEY key which
starts the car and opens the door locks only.

I want to get a couple keyless entry remote keys and the local Lexus dealer said I need a new ECM unit and told me to call Lexus customer service and ask them to "give" me a new ECM unit service which I did.

Lexus agreed to send the dealer an ECM unit at no charge to me if I agree to by the new remote key(s) and pay for the labor. ($251.00 for a new remote key and about an hour labor).
Sounds like a good deal to me considering the price of the ECM unit I read about
on other threads.

After reading all the other threads about key programming, I still am a bit
confused.

My question:
Can I buy a Lexus REMOTE(keyless entry)master key and program it from my VALEY key?

Or do you HAVE to have an original remote for this to work.

Thanks, sorry for yet another KEY thread!

You need the original remote master key to program the new key. That's why Lexus will Goodwill the ECM and you pay for the key. Jump on this deal Lexus Daddy and may be get an extra master key as well.

OK, thanks VVT-i, I think I will bite the bullet and do that, it's a good deal
from Lexus considering I bought it from a non-Lexus dealer.

At least they came down an additional $400.00 off the deal after they
told me about the lack of keys!

Default LexDad, sounds like youi have a good solution.

I assume when you say valet key you are talking about the black key. Page 8 of the owner's manual shows the black Master key and the Gray valet key (that does not unlock the glove box).

The master key is all you need if you want to program new keys in the ECU. However, by the time you buy the keys and spend the effort to program them, your deal is attractive.

I'm sure you have read this thread:

ederny,

The one key I have is the grey valet key that will not open the glove box.

I guess I will have to get the new ECM and new master remotes from Lexus.

Default LexDad, ok on the Grey key.

Well, I just don't know about the valet (gray) key. You know, I really wonder about previous owners and how they take care of things. Mind you, I was only given one key with my used (previously leased) vehicle. Might be me, but I feel you can tell how someone took care of the vehicle by a simple thing like keys and what they turnover when the lease is over. Here again, the maintenance book had only one entry - the pre delivery inspection. Ok, why would I buy such a vehicle, It was a very good price and it was from an established Toyota dealer.

Anyway, I would bet better than even money that the grey valet key will let you program more keys in because it has the transponder in it to start the engine - I just don't know for sure.

Good point. I wrote detailed instructions too on how to program new keys

but I don't recall if I actually tried to use a non-remote key to program another key. I think I used the remote master to program all my extra spares. My dealer only gave me one key too and fortunately it was the master remote.

By the way....I did get a couple of cheap already cut remote head keys off ebay. The remote head must be exactly the part numbers listed or it will not work. The transponder will still function and it will program into the ECM but the frequencies for the remote buttons will be incorrect. There are several other Lexus remote master keys that look like the RX300 master but they are unique and not interchangeable.

Default Just to clarify a bit more...

I have used both the Master key and the Remote key to program others, this leads me to thinking the Valet key would also work to program additional new keys. The issue here is the ECM must recognize a valid transponder to start the programming seauence.

Hello all,

I have exactly the same problem/question as OP. I recently bought 2000 RX300 with only one valet grey Sub key. I went to Lexus dealer and they said they will swap the ECM unit at no charge (After calling Lexus corporate and complain) but I will have to purchase 2 master/remote keys from them at $250 each plus labor. I’m looking at approximately $600 for two remote keys.

Then I found this board and all the threads regarding the RX keys. I went and order another valet sub key from lexus-parts.com assuming I would be able to program it. Well, the key came yesterday and I can not program it. I tried many many times.

Any advises or suggestions? Maybe its impossible to program the new key with only grey valet sub key available? Maybe the newly cut key is defective? I don’t know. I would hate to waste $600……

TIA

Edit: I only have this kind of key and I ordered the same key from lexus-parts.com.

The only key you are supposed to be able to program a new key into the immobilizer system with is the master key. The valet key is not supposed to be able to program any keys at all.

MODES OF REGISTRATION (PROGRAMMING)
There are 4 registration modes:
Add Mode
Adds a transmitter without erasing existing transmitter
codes. Four transmitter codes can be registered at one time. If number
of registered codes exceeds 4, previously registered codes are erased
in order, starting with first registered code.
Rewrite Mode
Erases all previously registered transmitter codes and
reprogram new transmitters.
Confirmation Mode
Informs user of number of existing transmitter codes already
programmed in system.
Prohibition Mode
Erases all existing registered transmitter codes and cancels
wireless door lock operation. Use this function if transmitter is lost
or stolen.
REGISTRATION OF RECOGNITION CODE
1) To begin programming, remove key from ignition switch.
Ensure driver's door is open and unlocked, and all other doors are
closed. Insert key into ignition switch, and then remove it. Go to
next step.
2) Complete the following in 40 seconds or less: press door
lock switch to LOCK position, and then within one second, press door
lock switch to UNLOCK position. Repeat procedure continuously until
door locks have been locked and unlocked 5 times. Close, and then open
driver's door. Go to next step.
3) Complete the following in 40 seconds or less: repeat
procedure in step 2), except for closing and opening driver's door.
Insert key into ignition switch. To enter desired mode, turn ignition
switch to ON position and back to LOCK position (one cycle), within
one second, the specified number of times. See REGISTRATION MODE
SELECTION table. Remove key from ignition switch. Go to next step.
REGISTRATION MODE SELECTION
Registration Mode No. Of Ignition Switch Cycles
Add .............................................................. 1
Rewrite .......................................................... 2
Confirmation ..................................................... 3
Prohibition ...................................................... 5
4) If any mode other than confirmation mode is selected, go
to next step. If confirmation mode was selected, door locks will cycle
0-4 times depending on how many transmitter codes are stored in ECU.
Example: two stored codes equals 2 door lock/unlock cycles.
Registration of confirmation code is complete after door locks cycle.
5) Complete the following in 40 seconds or less: if add mode,
rewrite mode or prohibition mode is selected, to confirm proper
initiation, door locks will automatically cycle one time for add mode,

Unhappy 2000 RX300 Door Lock Programming. I Give UP!

2000 RX300
Purchased used and of course only 1 master key and 1 valet key.
Purchased a key from an ebay/Lexus Dealer (cut to VIN).

http://www.lexus-parts.com

Okay, 1st I thought the instructions were a joke. Open & closing doors.

I followed the Homelink instructions, got it the 1st try.
Programmed the new key to start the car the 1st try.

RE: Programming New Remote Keyless Entry

After 30 minutes of attempting to get the key to unlock the doors, I give.

- All doors closed and locked except driver door.
- Insert new key and remove
- Lock & Unlock from door switch x5 (one that unlocks all doors)
- Close door and open x1 (doesn't make any sense to do it x1 then x5)
- Close door and open x5
- Insert new key to ON position and remove within 1 second.

NOTHING after that.
From the instructions the door locks should cycle x1 to confirm that the new key codes have been added.

What am I doing wrong?
Key light comes on when pressed, so I know it at least powers up.

Thanks for any help.

The instructions above are for registering the new key for the immobilizer system to allow the key to start the car. The problem may be in the opening of the door. You don't close and open the door 5x, you cycle the lock/unlock 5x. The door is only shut and reopened once.

Actually not.
The start key programming involves the brake & gas peddles.

I'm trying to program a new remote keyless entry.

Anyone have a solution for a 2000 RX300?

Have another idea for a last-gap measure to the "I just got a used RX with just a valet key"

Shove/jam/tape/hide that valet key near the transponder reciever (like a remote start installation)

Then just buy a master key for $200 or whichever, get the remote function programmed and fuhgettaboutit.

Just a thought, never tried this myself
