The difference is the looks...
...the current batch at ProCarParts are black instead of crome look. There are minor differences:
a) The turn signal lamp is colored, not the lens.
b) The wiring harness for the outer lamp assemblies are a bit different (replace those with the new ones supplied).
c) The backup lights (white) work a bit better.
So, mainly for the looks, that's why I did it.
Here are some "How2" instructions if you are interested (took pics when I did the change on a 99).
How2 Update Rear Tail Lamp Assemblies
