Default Oily, black soot in intake/throttle body

I searched and didn't find anything on this subject so any help is appreciated...

In my efforts to increase my gas mileage to something better than 11mpg, I cleaned my MAF, and removed the intake tubes to the throttle body and when I opened the butterfly valve and stuck my finger in there it came out black with sooty oily stuff. I pulled the throttle body and intake manifold and it appears there is oil getting up in the manifold. The part at the back of the manifold where the PCV valve hose connects is leaking a bit of oil. I bought a new PCV valve but suspect something else is going on. Any suggestions?

What sort of air filter are you using? If oil type then that is your culprit. If stock, if then how old is it?

Golden crown dry stuff would be ok.If you have sprayed any cleaner, then it can turn slimy/oil and a bit darker.

When PCV is working fine, it does allow vapors in the valve cover to come over in the intake. Check valve prevents the gas/vapor/air to travel in the reverse.

You may like to run a compression check and hold down check on each cylinder.

Salim - I have a normal paper air filter, I am installing a new one. Not sure how old the existing one is as the vehicle is new to me.

It may be normal but it seemed excessive to me so thought I would check.

Thank you!

If you're only getting 11 mpg then something is definitely wrong. See how it goes after the cleanup and the new air filter.

Ok, I cleaned the MAF sensor, replaced the spark plugs, cleaned the ICV, cleaned the throttle body and intake manifold, installed new air filter, replaced PCV valve, filled her up with premium and added fuel injector cleaner, drove 25 miles and I am now getting 18 MPG.

It only took one day and 6 beers. Thanks for all your help everyone.

Not a bad investment on a free car...

I'm not complaining! I can do a lot of work on this vehicle before I get up to it's current value. I sure like the car!
