Default Photo DIY: Changing the fuel pump

I ordered the Denso fuel pump and filter kit from Rock Auto. This was the OEM pump maker. I discovered this after getting the old pump out and seeing that it was a Denso pump. The pump and filter kit from Rock Auto costs about $130 plus shipping. The local Lexus dealership wanted $340 for the pump and $45 for the filter. The whole process took me 2 and a half hours. Two hours to get the old pump out and the new one in, and then 30 minutes to finish putting the vehicle back together.

The simplified process is:

-disconnect the battery
-take out rear driver's side seat
-peel back the carpet
-pry up access hatch
-disconnect fuel tube and wires
-unscrew bolts holding pump
-pull out complete fuel sending unit
-disconnect internal tank fuel hose
-pry off bottom plastic housing from fuel sending unit
-disconnect fuel pump wires
-pull out fuel pump
-replace with new pump
-reverse above process

Tools needed are:

Ratchet
8mm wrench
14mm socket
10mm socket
8mm socket
Flat head screw driver
Phillips head screw driver
Needle nose pliers

The first photo shows me disconnecting the negative side of the battery. The second photo shows the battery disconnected. The 3rd, 4th, and 5th photos show the plastic seat base covers removed to expose the front seat mounting bolts. These covers can be removed by wiggling them side to side and forward.

These photos show:

-The rear cargo carpet before being pulled back

-The rear cargo carpet pulled back to expose 3 black discs to be removed

-Using a flat head screw driver to pry the black retaining discs out

-After discs are removed and rear of seat cover folded back, a single bolt is exposed. This bolt takes a 10mm socket.

-Unscrewing the single bolt that is attached to a seat retaining strap.

These photos show:

-Arrows pointing to the two rear seat bolts. The seat has to be pushed all the way forward to access these bolts.

-Unscrewing one of the rear seat bolts. This takes a 14mm socket.

-Unscrewing one the the front seat bolts. The seat has to be pushed to the back position to access these bolts. This also takes a 14mm socket.

-All of the gunk under the seat after it is removed.

-Side view of the vehicle with the seat removed.

Images show:

-Rear driver's side seat after it was removed from the vehicle

-Area the seat was removed from after I vacuumed the area out

-Unscrewing the center seat belt strap bolt. It takes a 14mm socket

-Another black disc on the ridge behind where the seat was. This disc needs to be pried out

-Unscrewing the seat belt bolt for the left seat from the interior wall. This also takes a 14mm socket

These images show:

-Plastic interior door panel that has to be removed

-Black plastic disc that is hidden under the carpet and needs to be pried out

-Floor carpet pulled back to reveal fuel pump access hatch

-Close up of access hatch. The tab sticking out at the top is a good place to starting when gently prying the cover off

-Access cover pulled back. It doesn't unscrew, it an be pried up with a flat head screw driver

Images show:

-Wiring harness on top of fuel pump. Where the flat head screwdriver in the photo is inserted, one should squeeze (not pry) in order to release the connector.

-Wiring harness removed, and unscrewed the 8 tiny bolts that hold the retaining ring in place. As pictured, a nut driver with an 8mm socket was used.

-Some of the screws may be tight, and required a socket wrench to break them loose.

-The fuel supply line has a yellow retaining clip to help hold in on. A pair of needle nose pliers are used to squeeze the end with the "fingers". A flat head screw driver is then used to gently pry the clip forward.

-The retaining clip removed and the fuel line pulled off. Note: it's better to remove this fuel line before trying to unscrew the retaining ring bolts as pictured above.

These final images show:

-The fuel pump access hatch and the top of the fuel pump visible through the hatch.

-The fuel pump assembly retaining ring being lifted up through the access hatch.

-The fuel pump assembly partial lifted out.

-The hose clamp that needs to be removed. Needle nose pliers work pretty good for this.

-The removed fuel pump assembly. It is resting upside down in this picture compared to how it is in the vehicle. Also a black plastic piece has been removed just prior to this photo. The actual fuel pump in the center has to be moved back and forth before being pulled straight out. The new one should click into place.

Assembly is the reverse of this process.

Please add a link to the DIY thread.

What made you think that there was a problem with the pump/filter?

And did you do a postmortem?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Thank you for the post.
