Default DRL fuse setting

I would like to know if it is possible to change the fuse for the DRL.

According to the owner manual, the fuse is 7.5 Amp for DRL. If I want it brighter, can I change to 10 Amp or higher? I believe regular high beam is using 15 Amp.

Please correct me if wrong.

Thx in advance

bx,

Welcome to ClubLexus.

Hey, go ahead and try it...Fuses are cheap.

You can always change it back.

I think you are using the term "fuse" and the current limiter interchangeably. Fuse sets the max limit on current, before it pops. Usually it protects the switch and the wires in circuit. A 7.5Amp fuse can support a load of 90Watts. {93Watts @12.5v}.

The DRL have a currentl limiter in the loop, which is bypassed in high_beam_mode. You need to mess with that to get brighter light or change the bulb itself. Then again, I would not up the fuse till it starts popping under load. {At the most go up by a factor of 1.25 swag}

I and others have switched the bulbs out for brighter (100watts) and/or blue bulbs. I never liked the yellowish look of the DRL, and now mine look blue. PaddyWagon has a thread with a recommended list of replacement bulbs. Also I have been running the 100watt bulbs for over a year with no problems.

I put a pair of SilverStar on and only a bit of improvement

According salimshah, there's a current limiter somewhere in the loop and I would like to know if anyone done something on such device.

Thx

Service manual I have, only talks about the DRL relays and fuse. Maybe it is time to buy the electrical service manual.

I have been unable to locate the current limiter (reistance or something similar). This piece drops the the Battery + voltage and the high beam bulbs do not glow at the brigtest level.

Search and then post in GS300/400/430 forum. There was some discussion on how to defeat DRL.

Is there another option via reprogramming the CBEST parameter for the lowbeam auto-on? At a minimum, you could change the sensitivity so that the DRLs switch off and the low beams switch on sooner, right?

CBEST:
Automatic Lights Sensitivity -40%/-20%/0%*/+20%/+40%

Or, one step further - couldn't you just cover the sensor completely with black tape? Isn't it the round one right on the dash near the windshield?

So, I thought I had a pretty good idea here to eliminate the yellowish DRLs by just never allowing them to turn on (see last post). But, when no one responded, I started to wonder whether there was a reason you SHOULDN'T do this.

Is there a concern with having the lows on all the time, rather than switching between DRLed highs (day) and lows (night)?

I put the tape over the sensor this weekend and it works great so far!

Thanks,
Eph

Default Pitfalls

OK, after using my "black tape over sensor" technique for a couple weeks, I've decided it's *not* ideal.

#1 the tail lights and all other driving lights come on when the sensor is covered (as expected for night driving)

#2 the fog lights also come on (if you always have them in the on position). I was finding that I was turning them off during the day, whereas I like them on all the time at night. Too much effort!

So, the question remains (for me, at least) --

Has anyone found a bulb that is VERY white in DRL mode?

Thanks,
Eph

you're not gonna find a white bulb at the low wattage the drl's put out. it takes a certain amount of power to juice the light element up to where it is hot enough to put out the correct color light.

best bet is to pull the relay/plug beneath the battery and do away with drl's all the way. if you want drl's on just turn your healight on.......or wire a switch and wires to your headlight so only the headlights are on when you flip the switch........or better yet get some fog/driving light and use them for drl's hehe

Any one with the electrical diagram care to check and comment.

How does the RX drop voltage to HIgh beam(s) for DRL use? Where is that beast located? {I doubt the bulbs are in series circuit arrangement to get 6v each}
