I was changing spark plugs and have gotten an extension attached to a spark plug socket stuck in cylinder #5. I am going to try to get it out tomorrow. Basically, the Extension plus the socket is too long to remove and I have been unable to get the two separated inside of the cylinder. Any ideas?

Can you say more? Were you removing old plug or installing new one? Is the plug screwed in or loose? Is the plug stuck in the socket? You successfully replaced the other plugs with the same socket, right? Sounds like you inserted the socket first then the extension. If you insert a small screwdriver parallel to the extension you can hold the socket and pull the extension to separate. But then you will have to remove what appears to be a stubbornly stuck socket. Sometimes you can get long needle nose pliers open enough to grab the socket and pull it out.

I have installed the new plug, the plug is not stuck. The socket is stuck on the extension and I need to remove the socket and extension separately because when connected they are too long. I was going to try the screwdriver idea to separate them today.

You can hold the socket down using a flat head while pulling on the extension using pliers.

You might be able to tie a string to a magnet and drop it into the spark plug hole to get the socket out.

One more trick would be to attach a 3/8 to 1/2 adapter to reach the extension in the hole and then pull up. Hold the extension with little finger and ring finger and detach the adapter with index and thumb. This will reduce the length to pull everything out.

I do like the magnet idea the best.

I was able to get it out using a small screwdriver to push down and pop the socket off the extension, then retrieved the socket from the cylinder with a magnetic retrieval tool....

My other issue was the BWD ignition coil that I got from Advance Auto Parts 2 weeks ago to replace my bad coil in Bank 1 will not budge. While the OEM Denso coils come right out...Oh well, I hope that spark plug keeps going strong.

The socket connected to the extension was too long to remove in one piece. Magnet would not have helped, at least as I understood the problem. To OP: glad the screwdriver worked for you.
