We had a few other very expensive things go while it was under the 100k warranty...
A few off the top of my head:
* a $400 gasket in the exhaust line (I'm sure most of it was labor)
* front drivetrain. Yes, that's right -- the drivetrain! Car was riding with a funny back & forth motion. It was over $2000, and was 2 days worth of work
I've always been told growing up never to buy an extended warranty. That may have been true of older cars, but I'll never not buy an extended factory warranty again.
Of course, my '02 is out of warranty now... just hoping it lasts a few more years...

I got my lexus CPO 2002 RX300 in 2008. It had 67k miles when i bought it. I have 88k miles right now. In 2 years I've done:
brake pads - $150 + parts
oil changes - $ ?
I'm going to need new tires and my 90k mile service done soon. At least $1600 miles in work this year. Yay

I am 2nd owner of RX99, bought it at Lexus dealer at 51.6Kmiles on Aug'08. It is now at 82Kmiles. Dealer cost is really expensive, while sometimes it is good as it gives me a list of what to repair or about for repair. These forum DIY saves me money, and helps me to understand my RX - so thank you to all those people on these forum who shared a lot of DIY. Here is my RX300 maintenance schedule, while I will update the cost once I get some time.

I have a 2001 Rx with 94K miles bought in 2006 with 60K.....
2006-$700 rear main seal
2007-Minimal-oilchange/tranny flush(DIY)
2008-minimal-0il change/antenna mast(DIY)
2009-$100-oil/battery
2010-$450(Timing belt-Toyota dealer)

For the timing belt, was that $450 complete for both parts and labor?

Parts and labor....again most of it is labor...the water pump was going to be another$150....I told them to have a low threshold to replace the WP but they said it was perfect....They actually run a "coupon" for $350 for the highlander TB

Repair History '99 RX
It's been a long road but I still love my '99 RX at 200k and over 13-years old as it went into service June '98. Got it end of '01 at 48k certified used for $26,000. Not going over maintenance only repairs. Lot of this was high priced dealer but I was treated well:
86K - short block, timing belt, water pump, tail lamp (warranty covered)
88k - reman transmission, air flow meter, O2 sensor (warranty covered)
101K - Stop lamp switch ($287)
106k - Sway bar bushings ($114) rear tail light ($29) front strut top mounts ($447!)
115K - Exhaust gasket ($125)
140k - Clean ISC Motor ($125)
145K - Replace battery terminal ($74), Replace PCV valve ($76), Replace ISC Motor after cleaning did not work ($409)
168K - Replaced broken timing belt and also replaced water pump ($500 - dealer wanted $1,700 - bought parts and took to indy)
177K - Replaced Mass Air Flow Sensor ($282)
Thought it was a piece of crap 86k to 115k but since that time I can't complain about $1,450 in repairs over 85k and almost 6-years.

It's now been 3 years since I've owned this RX300, I've always been a toyota guy, but I am just extremely impressed with this one in particular.
In the 3 years that I've owned it I have only spent $800 on the car in total excluding Gas. $400 out of that $800 was just for tires. The other $400 was for oil (diy), filters(diy), ipod connection to stereo (best buy), brakes and rotors (diy), wheel locks(diy). The only repair and not maintenance item was when I overtightened the caliper bolt and it broke a few hours later and that was only roughly $60 because I had to have it drilled out. I've put roughly 14k miles per year, but I make many road trips out to Michigan.
How much do you guys spend per year or how much have you spent in your total ownership of the car?

I had to replace two oxygen sensors, one at 150k miles, at a cost of $130. And another at 158k, at a cost of $97. I then replaced the rear two struts and strut mounts for a cost of $450, at 160k miles. I also did the spark plugs at that time, which cost around $50. I have bought two set's of windshield wipers, for $40. And, just recently at 169k miles, I replaced the Rear and Front Valve Cover Gasket for $350. It was leaking very slightly, but I wanted it fixed. I also did the brakes again at 168k miles, which included both pads and rotors, but it only cost me NOTHING. I had warranty on all of the parts, and I did the install myself so it all worked out well. I also had an alignment done at 164k miles, for $81. And, in the last two years, all of the oil changes have totaled out to $131. I also did one drain and fill for the transmission at 164k miles, for $25.
Total for 5 years of ownership: only $2,154 (includes literally everything except, gas) (includes 1 set of tires)
The only unexpected repairs were the two oxygen sensors (which are to be expected if you are on the forum regularly, but they aren't to be expected from such a high-end vehicle, or from what once was a high-end vehicle). The other unexpected repair was the valve cover gaskets for both front and back.
Online articles state that the average cost for maintenance per year is suppose to be $1200. Which in 5 years is $6000. So according to that I should have spent an additional $3,846 somewhere. Now, instead of spending that on repairs, I can spend that on tech toys.
The RX is one reliable crossover, that's for sure!

Unless I missed something, I think your conclusion is misguided. Calculated maintence costs in most articles or studies is based on the average consumer/owner. To the average consumer, the vehicle is an appliance, where all work will be done under warranty or paid out of pocket at a qualified service shop. If you added up all the hours you spent diagnosing, looking for parts, ordering, installing, etc, at about $90/hour and added that as a labor cost, then I bet you'll come close to that $6k figure. Also add a markup on parts since that's what a service shops will normally do also, I had to have my radiator replaced last week (too cold in NY now to do it myself outside) and they charged more than I could have bought it myself online.

4/10/13- UPDATE - 195k Mile Update
I'm now at 196k miles, it has been 50k miles since my last post. Since July 2010, I've spent $2970.
Maintenance
This includes 2 sets of tires, the majority of the cost. A timing belt job, which included wp, cam seals, crank seals, etc. Also had the struts done all around, with new strut mounts in the rear. Of course, I also changed the oil regularly, and did the brakes with new rotors. I consider everything above regular maintenance and wear and tear that all vehicles will experience. Also had two wheel alignments done. Keep in mind, I'm very proactive when it comes to changing oil, I change my engine oil every 4k miles, and transmission fluid every 10-15k miles. So my cost may be a bit higher considering I do oil changes frequently, and use a highly regarded oil. Had the spark plugs changed as well.
Repairs
I'm going to put these two things in the category of repairs, although some may consider the valve cover gasket a maintenance item/wear & tear since all cars will need it at some point. But, for repairs I needed to have the valve cover gasket done, as the rear was seeping oil. I also replaced two A/F sensors, one by the radiator, and one after the catalytic converter. These repairs were all relatively cheap, the total of all these repairs came out to about $477.
I had to replace the oil pan due to the pan getting stripped. I was teaching one of my younger nephews how to change the oil, and of course he strips the pan. No worries, you live and learn. I learned a $167 lesson, never teach your nephews on your own car, teach them on their parents!
Total 110k mile Ownership Cost
So if you include the mishap with the oil pan, I've spent $3,770.58. I could have saved some money if I didn't buy cheap tires, as the cheap tires that I put on didn't last very long. If you've noticed I'm actually on my 3rd set of tires in 110k miles. Hopefully this set lasts longer.
I personally think that's very good, considering that this vehicle is now 13 years old. I haven't had to do any real repairs, it's been very reliable and for which I am very grateful.
Next update will be at 225k miles, so keep your eye's peeled for that. I'm planning on keeping the RX till at least 300k miles.
