Default changing the timing belt

I have a 2000 rx300 I have torn many vehicles apart and put them back together, but this is my first lexus and was wondering if anyone has changed the timing belt themselves? and if so any pointers?

Best advice/pointer I can give is try the search and look through the sticky DIYs.

The vvt train makes it a bit different from standard T belt change. But if you mark the gears and old belt and the transfer them to the new and align with the gears ... you can do it.

After changing the T belt on in-line4 Accord, I swore not to tackle it on a transverse mounted engine. RX is V6, so at 90K I let the professionals do it for me.

And Welcome!

Salim

Depends on your level of skill and mechanical knowledge. There are some who have changed a spark plug in their mower and so think they can handle anything. That type definitely NEEDS to HAVE it done!!! There are others who have never done it but have some credible activity going on above the ears. They may well be able to do it with the resources from this site. Only you know which category you fit in. As Salim said, there are resources on the site (good ones) so take a little bit of time and go over them. It has been done, and covered by MANY, including myself. A search will do you more justice than any of us repeating what has been said many times over could. When you're done reading what has been written multiple times in excellent detail, and still have questions, come back and I'm sure many of us would be happy to answer those questions. Good Luck!

Thanks pretty funny Roger. My wife says that I definitely do NOT fall into this category but I was able to do the TB job anyway.

I had my timing belt replaced 3 times at my local toyota dealership. The OEM belts were making a bad bearing noise under the timing belt cover. Toyota stated that the noise was caused by the way the belt was riding on the camshaft gears. Something I had never heard of. They tried to persuade me the noise was "normal". After 5 times of going through a "thats not a normal sound " phase, they replaced the belt with a napa(gates) timing belt which fixed the issue. Just a thought for when you change yours.

Does your wife pick on you too Art? For many years I thought I was the Rodney D. of the block, now that the years have rolled on and she has quite a lot of health challenges she doesn't have the energy to do it. Don't know which I regret more.... I'm sure it would be the health challenges. She taught me a sense of humor that I enjoy to this day. I often say "learn to laugh at yourself or someone will do it for you". Life is too short not to learn to laugh. Hey, I had the T/B off three times and replaced it twice, might not admit me to the Mensa Society but at least I can hang out my "Experienced" shingle.
