Default Cracked exhaust manifold.

I went in to get my new muffler put on (magnaflow), then I told the mechanic to check for a leak because I have been hearing this popping noise when I accelerate. To my luck he found a crack in the exhaust manifold by the O2 sensor. Asked for an estimate, $500 for new manifold, gaskets, and labor. I asked how much to weld it, $300 for gaskets and labor. What should I do?

Ask another muffler shop to weld the crack, should be cheaper than $300.
You can also go to junk yard for an used manifold, not hard to replace it, just couple of nuts to loosen and swap the O2 sensor.

Would a small crack cause a popping noise or bad gaskets? I asked another shop they said a couple hundred to take it out and replace the gaskets and weld it. But if they can weld it without taking it out it's $25. I'm still going to end up paying around $300 if it's bad gaskets.

If I can do it myself, what gaskets would I need to replace, with stock #'s?

Check out dealer's part department, the gasket is not cheap. I installed the manifold header of my Acura, kept the gasket receipt, found out the old gasket is ok and returned the gasket after the job.

I just checked out www.parts.com, for a OEM exhaust manifold....brand spanking new...$153.57 and the gasket would be $18.56....and with shipping, this would easily be cheaper that having someone repair your existing one especially for $300. Hope this helps.

alright thanks everyone. on monday i'm getting it welded at a shop for $25. if it doesn't work i'll just buy a new one and gaskets and i'm doing it myself. on the bright side though getting my secret weapon intake on 8/12, it's going to go nicely with my magnaflow muffler.

Make sure you reset your ecm when you complete your changes.

Weld the sucker and be done with it. I had to have nearly the same thing done when I was down in Mexico.

How do I do that? Unplug the battery?

And if I do get it welded and it still makes the popping sound should I change the gaskets and/or check for another crack?

Unplugging the battery or briefly removing the EFI Fuse shown below (if doing the fuse method, make sure you have the key out of the ignition and remember to put it back, just pull it out for about 10 seconds and then put it back in).

Another area for a crack is this area underneath the engine, where my uncle had to weld it.

Another place that can cause pops is this juncture here just in front of the main cat. It's held in place by 14 mm bolts and there is a gasket in there. Usually the bolts can be tightened and that can take care of it, but if not the gasket needs replacing. Area is just to the left of where the guy is cutting.

As an alternative to welding, does any know of any high temp epoxy? JBweld can be used on block, but not the exhaust.
