speed sensors on transmission
 

Hey y`all, any of you guy`s now where the speed sensors are located on our transmission? I heard it`s under the air box. Thanx

Yes, they are underneath the airbox. Note here on the top, upper right side with the hex bolt, dark sensor. That is one of them.

You need to remove the air box to get at them. One sits at a 45-degree angle facing the battery and can be seen without removing the air box. The other sits horizontal and is directly below the air box. Remove the 12mm bolt, then lift and twist to remove them. You will find some metallic fuzz on the end of the sensor, which needs to be cleaned off.
Also while you have them out, check to see if you have Aisin/Toyota or Toyota/Toyota sensors. The raised rib, which fits the keyway on your wiring harness plug, is off center on the Aisin sensor. It is centered on the Toyota sensor. If you want to buy a replacement sensor you need to buy the one that fits your wiring harness. The one in the picture above is a Aisin sensor.

I just wanted to jump in on this thread to share my recent experience. I have a 99 RX300 with 21,000 miles that was getting a "check engine light". The scan was giving me p0500 "vehicle speed sensor". My symptoms where late shifts for the first couple of minutes of driving. The light would come on for no longer than half a day, go off, then 2-3 days would pass before I would see it again.

I did some research and found that a couple of people had removed, cleaned, and then traded locations of the two speed sensors. I figured this would be worth a shot before dropping $200 on two new sensors. This was an easy task that took about 30 min. I'm now on day two and the transmission has not shifted late and I have not seen the CEL. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. If I go a full week with no symptoms, I will feel that this has solved my problem.

i was given a 99 RX300, the tranny was rebuilt by previous owner, (shop no longer in business) i have the P1725 code poping up, reerse is a little sluggish, what could cause this? im not a trannie guy and im on ssi disability HELP lol

First thing I would do is drop the pan and clean/replace filter. Also, check your fluid level.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the horizontal one is actually vertical??? Meaning it sits in/ is perpendicular to the top of the transmission casing as shown in Lexmex's photo I've modified? Blue arrow points to the vertical one just outside of the picture. Red arrow points to the one that sits at a 45 to the top of the transmission casing.

I looked for a long time for a horizontal sensor in the side of the transmission casing. I guess one man's horizontal is another man's vertical:egads:
