Sometimes the float is integrated with the fuel pump unit on some cars, the rx300 has a separate unit specifically to tell how much gas you have. The black part on the hanger is the float that floats on the fuel and sends a signal to your gauge as it goes up and down.

how are you so sure that its not coming on too late? or that your mpg has been affected by some other means?

If it were the float, then it still wouldn't explain why he isn't able to fill in as many gallons as before; right?

I don't know what it is about this topic, but people are simply not understanding what I am saying. So indulge me while I used the dreaded ALL CAPS. MY RX STOPS RUNNING SHORTLY (I.E. WITHIN TEN MILES) AFTER THE LOW FUEL LEVEL LIGHT COMES ON ALTHOUGH I KNOW FOR A FACT THERE ARE STILL 3 TO 4 GALLONS OF GAS IN THE TANK. (PREVIOUSLY I COULD DRIVE 50-60 MILES AFTER THE LOW FUEL LEVEL LIGHT CAME ON.) I ADD ONE GALLON AND THE CAR RESUMES NORMAL OPERATION. BUT IF I DON'T THEN FILL THE TANK (OR AT LEAST ADD SOME MORE GAS), THAT ONE GALLON WOULD LAST ME 20 MILES MAX UNTIL THE RX WOULD STOP RUNNING AGAIN. AND, THAT FILL-UP WILL BE NO MORE THAN 13-14 GALLONS ALTHOUGH THE TANK CAPACITY IS 17.2 GALLONS. ITS AS IF FOR SOME REASON MY FUEL INTAKE PICK-UP, WHICH HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN VERY NEAR THE BOTTOM OF THE TANK, IS NOW SOME DISTANCE HIGHER UP. THE PROBLEM IS DEFINITELY NOT THE FUEL LEVEL SENDER OR FUEL GAUGE.

If you're not looking for suggestions or theories to where to start troubleshooting...why bother posting your problem? Are you looking for other to agree with your assessment? Go with your gut, take stuff apart, troubleshoot on your own and post back if you wish to share the experience....or just pay up and let a mechanic sort it out.

I will only help out with the access from the top.
so how do you get access to the top of the gas tank ?
