30k Service

Hi Everybody,

Do you guys do any major services at your local toyota dealer?
My RX is due for 30k service. Lexus wants $625 and toyota charges only 489.

Thanks.

Take it to a local shop you trust and save even more.

Unfortunately, you can't simply ask for the "30k service". Every dealer defines it differently, and often the dealer's list doesn't match what your maintenance guide says. Lexus dealers are especially notorious for adding things you don't need in order to make more money.

Ask the dealers to itemize the work being done so that you can compare costs accurately, and check your book to see what's really necessary.

Toyota dealers are perfectly capable of doing your maintenance services, and they'll probably be less expensive than Lexus dealers. The RX shares the powertrain with the Sienna and the 6-cylinder Highlander. The only thing Toyota dealers can't do is warranty work, unless it's an emergency (the car broke down on the road) or there isn't a Lexus dealer within 150 miles.

I'd do my major work at Lexus. You don't get a loaner car at Toyota. And Toyota won't wash or vaccum your car like Lexus do. Factoring all that, the price difference is minimal.

I do the routine 5K oil change at Toyota. Very satisfied. It's faster than Lexus. Also $30 vs. $92.

Thanks for info guys

A service check is NOT major work ... just print this out and go to your favorite place .... http://www.edmunds.com/maintenance/M...g.secnav.8.1.*

Lexus doesn't do it any more special than any other place.

What is "service checks?"

Edmunds.com maintenance schedule can be wildly inaccurate. For example, 2000 Honda Accord requires timing belt change at 60K miles (it uses the old rubber belt, not the new neoprene.) Yet Edmunds.com listed the 105K-mile schedule for it. Any 2000 Accord owner who follow it will need a new engine when the timing belt breaks.

Follow the owner's manual.

I took mine to a local shop that advertised a 30k service for $129. That service included a tune up, which I didn't need. I paid $120 that included bleeding the brakes, etc. I supplied my own lexus oem filter and mobile 1 oil. They put everything they did on the receipt and stamped it in my book. Very happy customer!

Bay Area shop?

Am also looking for a SF Bay Area shop I can trust. A 15K is coming up and I know they charge four hundred some odd dollars for it. Someone is gonna argue why sweat the small "change" when its for a Lexus. The way I see it is I am not going to pay overinflated amount for things that I truly dont need.

HarrierAWD 06-24-05 09:21 AM

The 15K is no biggie. Just the usual 5K job and re-torquing drive shaft. Lexus doesn't do drive shaft anyway, so you can just take your Lexus to a Toyota ExpressLube and treat it like another 5K job.
