Default Help pls! 1998 Gs400 won’t shift into 1st when it’s in manual

Not sure if it’s a problem with my transmission or a sensor/computer. It runs fine when it’s in auto, but when I switch it to manual, it’s always in 5th gear to start (doesn’t matter if I’m at a complete stop or accelerating) and it won’t shift into 1st. Any thoughts?

Your car is fine. That is the way these transmissions are set up.

Your car isn't starting in 5th gear. It's that 5th gear is the highest gear it will shift into (eventually if you meet all conditions - speed, temp, etc.). Pressing the down button on the steering wheel when in manual mode should bring that number down and hold whatever gear is indicated on the readout.
