Default Another Intake question..

Hey everyone, I just bought a 2012 IS250. I noticed today that the previous owner had installed a spectre Intake. Can anyone vouch for this?? Seems pretty cheap online. The reason I ask is I spent alot of years modifying hondas. I own a 2010 SI also, and with the K20 engine there aren't any decent bolt on intakes that you can really run without retuning. You can run into all kinds of problems with a cheap intake setup. Is this engine the same way? or do I have nothing to worry about?

I was considering ordering the F-sport Intake but I'm missing the oem air box now! Does anyone have a lead on the upper airbox? I don't see much on ebay, and the new price is like 400 bucks.. thanks everyone

I'd just leave the intake; the car will adapt. If you haven't already, I'd recommend disconnecting the battery for 20 minutes so that it'll force the car to re-learn to adapt to your driving style.

See, I know how an ecu works. I get if you reset it, it will relearn itself to your driving. I've tried this strategy over the years a few times, my wife has a lead foot so every once in awhile I'd restet the ecu and drive normally in hopes that the fuel economy might pick up . Anyway the thing is, an ecu will not "tune" itself to accomadate aftermarket components. If that was the case, people would just bolt on a turbo kit and go! Tuning shops and dynomometers would be out of buisness! I mean, even standup companies like AEM have sold intakes with the MAF in the wrong place.. A poorly designed intake can change your a/f ratio to the point of making your engine knock. This is my concern.
Back in the day you could really throw any intake on any vehicle and not have the slightest concern but, not exactly the case any more. I noticed in some other threads that someone finally cracked this ecu to be able to retune it? Thats crazy! Long time coming i'm sure! I'm not looking to modify this car at all, Honda has way more aftermarket support. I'm just looking for reliability. Any other thoughts are greatly appreciated.

So, thru my voyage in and out of posts this am , I did find inside if another post a site that supports ecu tuning. RR-RACING.com. Which is kinda weird. I think there was a company that made parts for the probe-MX6 that had the same name.

I can tell you this, if you're looking for hp gain, don't get the K&N system. I put it on my 11 IS250, and saw a very noticeable decrease in power. The other obvious issue was in the idle. It would just not idle correctly at all when cold. I have since put the factory intake on, and it runs like a champ. Added exhaust, and I'm good to go.

The spectre intake is one of those "performance" parts you can buy at autozone along with their cheap and tacky accessories like fake vents and other stuff. It's basically just as ineffective as K&N and will NOT get you any gains at all. If you do want to get some sort of gain, albeit a small one, get the F sport intake or a Joe Z intake tube. Our stock intakes are basically the best intake there is for our cars until someone creates a true cold air intake like OV is doing, that routes to the front bumper. Until then, any claims of gains from an intake are just marketing Bs

Well I have an F sport intake box, with the Joe Z tube. I see it as a cheaper F sport intake since that's basically all it is...

It doesn't have to be a Joe Z tube. But from what I've read on the forum, the only intake that makes a difference is the Joe Z with a tiny gain of like 2-5 hp which is something you don't even feel. Where as the F sport is about the same, maybe less due to the whole in the air box..

Either way what I'm trying to say is that Changing the intake is basically pointless and any claims of gains are a bunch of made up lies. The only intakes that do anything at all are the ones that I've listed above. And even then they are very small... Until of course, we get a more legit setup that can actually benefit the vehicle.

It's pretty much the same as the standard intake pipes out there. Joe Z, HPS. ....
