Default Meineke just tried to sell me exhaust manifold w/ cat for $1350 !!! good deal ??

'99 gs300 205k. ok so my check engine light ( CEL ) came on so i stopped at the nearest autozone and had them pull the engine code , it was "catalytic efficiency" , so i made an appointment at my local Meineke for a free evaluation. they used a heat/temp laser sensor to check the temps on my Catalytic converter , and they told me that i need a new one , then the guy tells me that the exhaust manifold and cat converter is all 1 unit and it will cost $1350 + 4hours of labor. and also that i should replace all 4 of my O2 sensors at about $500 for all 4 +labor , i came home and looked at rock auto and found that they have Bosal direct fit exhaust manifold/cat converter for $510 ,, and i can't find any other exhaust manifold on the net even close to $1350 , i found a magna flow for $690 , but that was the highest i could find. please give me any help on finding the right part at the right price. also would like you're input on if you think Meineke is try'n to rip me off. thanks

NO......get the code start from there..

It can be something as simple as a exhaust leak pre-cat...and if it is the cat an OEM or after market can be welded/swapped on. I assume you have a 2J.

Whats your Code?

i forgot to get the code## from the guy at auto zone , but the readout said " Catalytic Efficicy " so i figured that was code p0420 . yeah i have 2j engine. also the guy at Meineke didn't tell me about welding/swapping anything out ,, he just said " you need new catalytic converters , and those are attached to you're exhaust manifold so its all 1 unit and that unit is $1350." ,, do you think i should get a 2nd opinion at a different shop ?

No problem, i tend to be Blunt sometimes its my nature. Im my old age im Grumpy as hell.

This is what i would do..

Go to autozone or equivalent.. Get the Actual Engine Code. Do a quick search on the Forums.. See what pops up..

Take a few minutes to be your own Doctor..use the info to diagnose your car with peoples experience with the same code..I.E. Funny smells, Noises, the way car acts..etc...

Once you get a close enough educated guess what the problem might be then your either take it to a mechanic or DIY without getting ripped off.

the cats on the exh mani can be replaced a sa whole unit cheaper than what they quoted you. Im not sure if there is a third cat down stream, but if you do, you need to know which one is bad.

no prob. thanks again for you're help , you made my stress factor go way low on how much this is gonna cost in a worse case situation. the guy at meineke was tell'n me 2,500 for exhaust manifold w/cat +4 O2 sensors.. and it looks like i wont be spending anything near that amount.

i doubt all four 02s took a dump all at once.... maybe be one, thats why is good to get the code or codes. a good shop will check each O2 and tell you which one if any is shot. all you need is a volt meter. Better yet a good shop will plug you right up to an Good O Snap On diagnostic comp and tell you. I just use my handy $20 voltmeter.

Now if your doing a complete exhaust overhaul then yes, new Exhaust mani, Y pipe, and new four 02s can begin to justify that cost.. But is that what you went in there for/ or is it what you need is the question. Everyone is looking to make a buck..

o i c . thanks. , i went in there for them to look at my exhaust because i got the CEL and let me know what my options were ,, and they only gave me 1 option ,, 2500 for exhaust mani and 4 o2 sensors , i'm gonna grab the codes+ go to a different shop next week. ,, and yes i'm willing to do a complete exhaust overhaul , but not for the amount they were talk'n bout ,, worse case situation: it looks like i can get exhaust mani for . $300-500 and 4 o2 sensors for $300 ,, and that leaves me plenty of cash to get the rest of the exhaust system if needed.

yes, shop around.. You may be able to get all the parts and have some one do it for you, even a CL member around your area willing to help you out and make a few bucks, beware, some shops will not do any work for you unless you buy the parts from them (Liability/warranty clause), so ask if they are willing to do just the Labor Vs. Labor and parts.

yeah, thanks a lot for you're help. and yep .. you're right about that liability/warranty clause ,, meineke told me they cant warranty the exhaust mani +cat unless i buy and replace the o2 sensors at same time .
