Was that rust on the pipes? I thought SRT used aluminum piping?

Yup, that looks like rust.. He might want to get that pipe remade and I'm not liking the sharp 90 degree bends on those intercooler pipe at all.

Yup...it was surface rust...came right off though. I think the piping is in fact aluminum though...it feels exactly like other aluminum piping that I bought a while back when I was trying to make a cold air setup on my intake.

The piping was powder coated silver with surface rust. It looks SICK right now. Mainly the rust was on the two pipes down low connecting to (and from) the intercooler.

Why would I want to get the pipe re-made? The surface rust comes right off. If the 90 deg bend bothers you...I am not about to change all the piping (because if you thange the angle/pitch of one you have to start adjusting/changing all of them) and spend tons of $$$ just to be able to squeeze out 20whp more. lol

When Mr. Johnson had this kit he was making around 418whp and around 365wtq and that was WITHOUT headers. I have headers and I am actually going to scale down on the power levels (by using the larger pulley) to say around 380whp or so; I'll be happy with that. So, all in all I really don't care about the 90 deg bend that much if it impedes power levels because I am NOT trying to wringe ever last bit of power out of this setup. The tranny will remain stock with just perhaps the addition of a VB upgrade.

What I'm trying to suggest was that since the piping had rust on it already, you might need to change the piping. But since you said that it was surface rust, you might be able to get by with it. I've seen kits out there before using a lower grade of aluminum which contains some metallic compound in it which results in rust. For peace of mind, I would say take the pipe that was rusted and have it pressure tested. A radiator shop should be able to test it for you for $20 max.

nothing wrong with the 90 degree bend Rock...keep the pipes. If the rust bothers you, get it coated.

You guys are ABSOLUTELY CORRECT! I contacted SRT and they said that all their kits back then (10 years ago) were done with mild steel; they switched to aluminum about 4 years ago. So, yes...it is mild steel. I tell you what though; it polishes up SICK!!!

Also, I contacted a high-end powder coating company that deals exclusively with car parts (local to me) and they said that for about $150 they can powder coat ALL piping with a clear, special high heat powder coat that WILL adhere to highly polished mild steel piping as they have done it plenty of times.

So, it's cool to know that I won't have to scuff the piping up at all. I like the polished look a lot. Powder coat black is also nice but I'd like a little bling in the engine bay.

the pipes are just fine. no need to spend the money to replace. I would just powder coat them to help them against weather.

man I cant wait to see how this comes together and what the headers add to the mix.
