Default High pitched squeeking belt sound from engine ...

Ok, this worries me. I heard it only a couple times since I've had my car and it just started recently. When I start my car, I always wait and let it do a warm up, but now I hear a high pitched squeeky sound that sounds like it is coming from some sort of belt. It worries me.

I tried to replicate the sound but no luck. Very weird. It happens when I least expect it.

Any idea what it could be?

The squeeling sound is generally caused when your belt is slipping against one of the pullies. It could be that your belt is loose (belts tend to stretch when they wear), or it could be dirt and grime on your belt. Inspect your belt for cracks and wiggle it from left to right to make sure it is tight. If it looks o.k. than you might want to try some 'Belt Dressing'. It comes in a spray can and you should be able to find it at any auto parts store. If it still squeels after that, try tightening the belt.

Brendan,

This happens on both my Lexi and my bro's 430. I presume it is due to high humidity as well as belt wear as Flexor stated. Has it been hotter and/or more humid then normal where you are? That could also explain part of it. My service manager doesn't seem too concerned at this point. I hope this helps.

Same thing happened to me with 15k on the clock. Took it to the dealer, they replaced the serpentine belt. Haven't that problem since.

Might also be that your bearings are going in your alternator causing the pulley to squeal every so often. Just something to think about. Do the simple things first like the others have stated.

It also could be your A.C. compressor pulley. Have you noticed it with the A.C. on or off?

Ive had this problem before on my car too, you can fix it temporarly but it will come back, what it is, is your V-belt becomes wet or moist wenever its hummid or in my case wet outside the noise only comes on when the car is cold or when it has been sitting still for a while if that is the case then you have nothing to worry about, it will go away after the car warms up and the belt dries alittle, you could always change the belt but that would be a waste of money in my opinion since those belts should last up to 90k miles ( I just got mine changed at 90k )

I asked the same question a couple of weeks ago and got some great feedback.

brendanlim,

i had a similar problem, but mine is a GS4. every now and then, i would hear like a "chirp" sound from the engine. kinda high pitch chirp that would last for a few seconds, and stop. i brought it to the dealer and it turned out that the water pump was going. so they replaced it for me for free cuz it's under warranty. hope this helps.

If it's the V-belt, I would replace it with a generic Autozone belt every 10,000 miles or whenever you need to. I had the same problem on my gs and I replaced it originally with a Toyota belt but the problem came back after about 20,000 miles...ever since, I have been using a $15 belt as opposed to the $70.00 belt from the dealer...No problems...even I did, I could easliy replace it again and still same money. Just my 2 cents.
