Doing the filter replacement is NOT for the faint of heart. I'm an engineer and weekend mechanic, and the only jobs that I fear are those where something can crush me or something can blow up. This job had me spooked cause I don't normally work around an open tank of gasoline, and I was afraid of creating a spark. NOT a very fun job, but necessary. If you're the least bit tentative on this one, take it to a shop mechanic.

Could have posted in the other thread as well. Wanted to call attention to how much this filter being clogged can have on the performance of the car. The other posts are more 'how-to's. Thanks, BTW, for anything you posted in the other threads that helped me do this job.
Actually, that's worse off than working with a full tank lol. If you have a full tank, the fuel vapors will be near the top of the tank. The blowing fan can dilute the vapors near the top as I said earlier. Now, if the tank is completely empty then there's a whole tank full of fuel vapors! Either way, this is not really that difficult of a job. You have to be pretty careless to ignite the fuel.
Maybe this was simple for YOU. Maybe you do these kinds of things all the time. I thought I made my point that I don't normally work around an open tank of gas, nor do the rest of us desk jockeys. I do all kinds of my own work on this car, I work with propane torches, etc. My point remains that this is not "normal weekend mechanic" stuff. JeffTsai's point was really a good one though, would have made me more comfortable doing this.

The sock is not necessary. If I remember correctly, my sock was 90% clearn when I pulled it out. You would have to have a cruddy source of gasoline to get the sock clogged.
To relieve pressure in the fuel line so that you don't squirt gas all over the place, disconnect the fuel pump connector and then try to start your car. If it turns on, let it run until the engine dies. If the car just cranks, then you don't have much pressure so you're good to go.

it may not be needed but its a $10 part and while your in there, go ahead and change it. my sock was dirty though.keep in mind alot of us bought these used so no telling what people have run through there. so again IMHO its worth the $10 or whatever it was
That is true, hence why I bought mine thinking it was going to be dirty. In the end I replaced it anyways, but I should have pulled it out before I bought the filter. My main filter wasn't as dirty, but $40 is nothing for maintenance.
So anyone got a link on where to buy this for the best price in it's entirety? sewell is Fuel Filter Assembly is 41 while the sock alone is 11 i believe. Is that the the best price, and would i have to buy both for 50, or does the assembly come with both? thanks!
Also while i'd be replacing this, anything else that can be replaced while down there for preventative maintenance?

Hrm.. the place I bought mine at has free shipping, but I don't know if they extend that offer to places outside the LA/OC area. I got both the filter and the sock for $41 shipped after tax. I'll PM the info to you along with the part number.
