Default question about transmission

ok so i was always wondering.. say we are driving at 65 mph.. the Rpm would be about 2k. when you let off the gas the revs drop down to about 1.5k. was wondering why it does that?

im comparing this vehicle to say my parents 04 camry. doing the same thing 65mph and letting off the gas.. its revs stay up.. while the GS's drop??

why?

has to do with torque converter stall speed or the amount of slip it allows. someone correct me if i'm wrong.

It depends if the transmission has the torque converter lockup engaged. Every modern car has this function, but when they activate or disengage is different on all models. The GS seems to unlock the converter without much hesitation. Just a bump in the throttle around 10% and it unlocks. I've driven other cars that take at least a good 30-40% throttle or so before unlocking. Locking the TC essentially turns the auto trans into a manual transmission in the sense which everything is directly coupled to the engine. Locking is more efficient for fuel efficiency because theres no loss through slip, however there is less torque multiplication so the car is a bit more sluggish. With the TC unlocked, the engine can rev higher and make more power + the stall brings up the torque.

I was actually wondering about the same thing too. So is there anyway to make the rpm not drop when let off the gas?

Not an easy way to do it, it's just how these cars are programmed. The TC usually stays unlocked to allow higher torque multiplication. If you really want to, you can get a standalone transmission controller and have it custom programmed. It will cost you around $1500 at the very least, but more likely around $2k to get it wired in and tuned. IMO, not really a wise investment unless you're seriously racing/competing on the track.

I've heard people talking about changing the TC on gs400 but what exactly does it do and how much would it cost to replace the stock one with aftermarket one?

Excuse my ignorance, but is that why when I floor it my car revs up for a bit and then finally goes?

That would be the torque converter stalling up. Or, it might just be that you have too much slack in the throttle cable.
