Performance Chips - The Mother Thread
I'm guessing that on some older simpler systems the IAT temp mod could work. Basically the ECU is fooled into thinking the air coming into the engine is colder than what it really is. Cold air is denser than warm air so you can burn more fuel. The ECU provides more fuel and you may get more power at then expense of lower fuel economy and increased emissions. The problem is that many / most newer cars have multiple other sensors that will pick up that the car if running too rich and give you an error code or recalibrate the mixture to bring the air/fuel ratio quickly back to stock.
So I tend to agree that $300 for a NOS system for an extra 50 HP may be the way to go...

I was looking at a gf performance chip for my 06 is350. It says it increases hp by 30. Does anyone know how good these things are & if the hp increase is what they say it is?
I think we need a sticky thread for these "performance" chips informing the obvious then maybe we won't see these threads pop up every 2 months from new members lol you'll gain more hp by stripping your interior than wasting money on a chip that'll probably mess up your ecu

I'm Chevy guy over here posting in enemy territory.
But, every time a new GM ECM comes out the aftermarket companies like HP Tuners (the one I use) are able to generate a new version to match the new computer within months. GM's flash PROM may not have as many barriers as Toyota's and the incentive is there for GM since it's a huge performance aftermarket, but regarding the Toyota ECM, where there's a will there's definitely a way.
+1
