You put the MAF sensor somewhere in the charge pipe. As long as it's in there you'll be good to go. It's necessary to keep the stock MAF sensor in the air stream for the automatic transmission to function. The transmisson control and shift points are based off the MAF sensor readings.

Technically you can use any standalone system on this car. Reason being is because there is no application specific standalone system for a 2nd gen GS with the 2jz VVTi engine. Any system you use will require you to build a custom harness or pay someone else to make a plug and play harness for you. As long as the standalone system you are using can control 6 injectors and 6 ignitors...you'll be good to go. The PowerFC is an older system so I think that might be part of the reason why nobody really uses it...also I think Apexi filed for bankruptcy so you probably won't be getting support any more from them.

One other upside about the AEM EMS, you can control your VVTi system thru the AEM's various PWM outputs. You just have to know how to wire it up and tune it. Or if you're sending it to a shop...make sure they know how.

I bought the HKS F-Con V pro. I too tried to use a piggyback (map-ecu) but there is still some issues: relearning, startup, lean in tip, etc. I spent many hours tuning on a dyno and driving. You need a standalone! Trust me. If your like me, you want it to feel like stock until you step on it. Mine will be installed on next Saturday so look for an update. All the aristo's in Japan are running f-con. There must be a reason and I have never read one bad comment ever.

yea most of the supras (coz not many worked gs or 2nd gen aristos) are using PFC here in aus
my main concern is that the standalones wont have all the functions as a stock computer would, namely how the auto shifts and traction control etc

Man, you must be ballin! lol. The HKS isn't cheap to buy and you have to have a authorized/certified tuner to tune that system.

Running a standalone on these cars is different than on other cars. On the GS, the factory ecu is so complex and intergrated into the car...it's very difficult to run the car without it. Instead, what people do is run dual ECU's. So the factory ecu still controls transmission, gauge cluster, links with vsc/abs, and whatever else in the car that is multiplexed onto the stock ecu. So basically, you let the factory ecu do what it was meant to do and have a standalone to control the fuel and ignition of the engine strictly.

well it does stand alone in doing the one thing it was designed for, running your motor.

I would not ever again touch a piggyback ECU, I tried for months to screw with mine and it was nothing but one big headache. I have a Haltech E8 going into my car now, running a stand alone is the only way to go with these cars if your going to mod them. You might blow your engine running a piggy back, these cars are constantly changing the fuel curves, I tried everything from wiring a resistor into the coolant temp sensor to keep the car in cold start mode, hooked up a black box to reset the ecu on ignition cut, tried running with no 02 sensors.. nothing works. Pull the ecu out if your going FI... IMO a supercharger is a bad way to go, you can put together a complete turbo kit for under 5 grand.

I think any standalone will throw a cell, just ignore it or pop the bulb.

I wouldn't think they care about cells as long as you pass emissions.

IN the states that I know of, you cannot pass emissions if you have a CEL
