Default Can hitting the redline for 1 second cause damage?

If so, what would be some signs of a damaged engine? My car feels and runs normal, I'm just a little concerned because last time I raced someone I forgot I had my car in manual mode, had it floored and bounced off the rev limiter pretty bad (maybe 1 second went by; I had the stereo on pretty loud so I couldn't really hear the revs). <---no good!

The rev limiter is there to prevent damage to your motor. Hitting it will not damage the engine. Different manufacturers cut off fuel/spark in different ways. I've felt vehicles that slam back when the limiter is hit, while others gradually fall back.

Don't sweat it but don't make a habit out of it.

That's interesting that the Lexus will let you hit the rev limiter before shifting. That's actually a good thing

I've done that by accident in 2nd gear before. It sounds nasty and is not the best thing for your motor I'm sure. That's why it's there though, to prevent the revs from getting high enough to grenade the motor. I'm sure hitting it once in a while is ok but I wouldn't do it all the time.

It's fine and won't cause any serious damage. The rev limiter is put there for a reason. Now, if you hold it there at redline for a minute or two....I don't know about that lol.

I know I know, I wasn't paying attention. It was not a planned race like from a traffic light or something; it was sort of from a 30 mph roll. I didn't realize I had it in manual mode from earlier and stereo was loud so I didn't even hear the engine over-revving. I am a good driver though...just a little dissappointed because of that stupid error that costed me the race...

you should be fine, almost all things are engineered with a safety factor, i would guess you could probably go 500 rpm higher until damage does become evident, but don't make it a habit. Like I said its a SAFETY factor. I seriously doubt that engineers would put the redline right at the point the engine would self destruct, you would have a lot of pissed off people lol.
