Default Final Drive, which is best for YOU ... Gear ratio mph/rpm

I have been doing some searching and reading on different final drive ratio and what seems to be the best for ME, the best for one person is not always the best for another. So the point of this little thread is to discuss and show what effects all the available final drives have on the GS400 (and 300 too).

Just a quick note or two before I start ... In drag racing the idea is to put as much power down while traveling the distance of a 1/4 mile and ultimately the more times we can reach peak HP the quicker the car will be. If we could use all 5 gears, crossing the trap box at peak HP/RPM in th 5th gear, this would be the ultimate. But in most street cars it would be unrealistic do to the fact that we would have a horrible cruising RPM and a 6200 rpm Rev limited top speed of about 100-120mph. In road racing/auto-x the best gear ratio all depends on the track and once again the more times we can hit peak HP in a straight the faster we accelerate but we dont want to end up with a weird shift point causing a time lengthing up or down shift.

Ill start 1st by going over all the available final drive gear ratios. Then I will post a MPH/RPM chart for each option for all to see and use (I don’t believe this has been discussed in detail or charted, at least I could not find it using the search) I will try and add to this over the next few days so that it can be seen in full detail.

OK now on to the available gear ratios. I know this has been covered a few times but once more will never hurt and if I miss any please let me know so that I can have the full list listed here for reference. Right now I would like to only list those that will be an easy bolt in job using a complete salvage yard carrier assemblies. Please correct me if Im wrong on any of this.

3.133 ratio ... TT Supra manual (early & late model)

3.266 ratio ... GS400, GS430, 2nd gen SC400

3.769 ratio ... TT Supra AT (early & late model)

3.92 ratio ... 1st gen SC400, 2nd gen GS300

4.08 ratio ... 1st gen SC300 manual, Non Turbo Supra (late model)

4.27 ratio ... 1st & 2nd gen SC300 AT, Non Turbo Supra (early model)

And now the transmission. The 2nd gen GS300, GS400, and GS430 all run the 5 speed A650E auto transmission. Here are the gear ratios for that (thanks GSteg for this info in my last post)

Gear Ratios:
1st 3.357
2nd 2.180
3rd 1.424
4th 1.000
5th 0.753
Reverse 3.431

I will be using the stock tire size of 225/55/16 and a max of 6200rpm to map the MPH/PRM. For any of you that would like to jump ahead or figure your RPM/MPH for using alternate tire sizes use this site http://www.f-body.org/gears/ ... It is the best gear ratio calculator that I have used to date.
