Is this street legal or "for off-road use only"?

no. its a cat back by the definition of the word.

from the cat, back.

basically its a similar exhaust to the LMS, just not made by a bunch of amateurs.

the primary cats are left untouched, so it should be street legal.

This is incorrect. You cannot remove any catalytic converters (primary or secondary). This is a federal law and applies to all 50 states. There is no (legal) way around this.

Sorry to be such a buzzkill but I don't want any CL members here to get a nasty surprise when they go in for testing as penalties can be rather stiff.

if you live in CA, yea you might be screwed. else wise, its a perfectly fine exhaust. the primary cat, that which holds the o2 sensors, is untouched so emissions will be fine.

if there WAS a federal law about it then a product would not be available for sale, especially not by a company like borla. I've sent them an email concerning this, i'll let you know if/when you're wrong

probably the oval, since the actual product picture contains them. there is no "debate" about cat back. if the exhaust replaces the oem exhaust from behind the cat, then its cat back. if it doesn't, then it is something else. end of story.

There is a federal law against tampering with/replacing/repairing your cats.

The justification the aftermarket parts manufacturers use is "Off Road Use Only" to get around the law. I don't know how many IS owners are going to be going 4 wheeling in BFE but that is the purpose Borla and others are 'expecting' you to use their parts for. Wink, wink.

I spoke with a local muffler shop here in Texas, and they said it is indeed illegal to remove any working factory catalytic converter. It doesn't matter whether it is monitored or not, and it doesn't matter if you are just removing part of the total system.

If I'm remembering correctly, the LMS website does state "for off-road use only" regarding their exhaust.

That said, I really like this, and am not particularly concerned about the legality issue. Hopefully it sounds good.

Not bad, but I don't like how it uses clamps to hold the pipes.

It's hard to tell from the picture if the front section acts as an H-pipe / X-pipe. I certainly hope so.

Aren't there two sets of cats?

it acts as an X pipe.

and yes Nova there are two sets of cats, hence why i chose the words primary, and secondary.

pocky, it has two of them. the stock system only has one i believe, so it is an improvement i suppose.

al and gernby, thats why i sent them an e-mail, because they do not have 'off-road use only' on the website.

regardless, my state is cooler than yours, because it doesn't give a ****. i'll be daily driving it, dependant on sound.
