Just curious as to why you wanted to remove the cats from the exhaust. Was it to get a better sound or for performance reasons. upgrading the exhaust might bump hp from 204 to 207 in that engine no?
Its for performance and sound. The gains might be minimal on the low end, but removing the two cats, resonator, and the mufflers with highflow ones will give you good gains on higher rpms.

Less cats = less restriction = more power. It'll also be louder.
I suspect he'll get a much better bump in peak power output that 3hp. Taking those two cats out will probably net somewhere in the 10-20hp range anyway.
Your car does look very clean and I like the way the tail lights look all red. BTW.. did you just get that stuff off ebay and cover the orange on the tail lights? Also, where is everyone getting their rear spoilers?

for some reason the old and new IS likes to have couple CAT... these things are design to make your car run cleaner... most avearge cars have only one and when you take it out your car will sound super loud. it will save you a lot of weight though....

Actually, most modern cars have at least 2 cats. Others, like my WRX have 3. The IS has 4 because it runs precats off each bank of cylinders, and then 2 more in the downpipes. If they used a 6->1 exhaust, they could get away with fewer cats (but less power due to the flow restrictions).

I removed all the cats in my old wrx. The benefits of that in a turbocharged car are much greater than non-turbo engines. I was able to get more hp (maybe 12-15, but not more than that) and quicker spooling. I still don't see the performance benefits of doing that mod, or wanting to get more noise from a car (and company) designed to be exceptionally quiet. I do have to admit the end result does look sweet though!

You could have made a whole lot more than 10-20hp with some engine management to take advantage of that exhaust. With no cats, you're looking at around 280 crank HP with EM... a 60hp bump or so. In fact, running a turbo'd car with no cats and no EM tends to lead to blown motors due to boost spiking.

Boostspike is in the quality of the boostcontroller and wastegate. That is, if they're aftermarket.
yea some stupid *** decided to give me some of his paint and not tell me. imma remove it tonight. i removed 2 of the 4 cats that are on the car
Hey Ihkskim, you mean that we have 4 cats on our stock exhaust as oppose to just one. Wow, thats a lot. No wonder the IS250s can't breathe on high-ends.
I have the before and after dyno graphs done on my 350 that show that I gained almost 5 hp at the wheels from removing the second set of cats, the resonator, and those huge mufflers at the end. I put in straight pipes from where they cut everything out and weighed everything as they removed it from the car and what they put back on the car. It actually gained 8 lbs putting the two straight pipes and Magnaflow mufflers on. But i'll take an 8 lb weight gain for almost 5 more hp at the wheels anyday.
Here is a quick pic of everything that was removed:

Ah, no, not really. Not unless you're running a manual boost controller, which is a bad idea. The ECU controls wastegate actuation and boost. If the ECU isn't tuned to deal with a free flowing exhaust, you're going to get boost creep and/or spike.
