Default Quick question about Tranny fluid re-fill

I ended up getting a great deal through my friends friend on my TC replacement. Their shop is supposed to do it in just a few days.

In reading another thread, I got to wondering about the fluid. There's an older thread where basically several knowledgeable and respectable peeps on this board said they used 16qts for their TC swap / flush.

If I drain the tranny pan, I'll get how many quarts?? 4-6? (I'm really guessing here) The TC holds about 2-3 tops before it can be put on, right?

Just wondering, if those numbers are close, where all the other quarts needed are coming from!

I want to be certain that all the old fluid gets out! (the shop probably knows what to do, but, I like to know this stuff too)

Thanks!

i'm pretty sure you're not supposed to drain all the fluid out all at once. If I recall, the process involved draining and filling up and draining and filling up while the car is running. My tranny fluid was pretty much mud according to my mechanic so it took a bunch of fluid before it started coming out clean....probably cuz it wasn't changed for 90k miles....it was night and day tho....now I'll probably have the tranny flushed more often and probably use less fluid.

When I had my newer 2600 stall converter put in, I bought a case of ATF but the dealer only used 6 of them.

thanks guys, sounds like I should mention the drain/fill technique to the shop....

this wait is absolutely KILLING me! I've got the TC and 16 qts ready to go, in my trunk, just waiting for "the call" from the shop. (special pricing, so, I have to wait for a lull in their activity)

KILLIN me I tell ya!

Post Trans fluid/ TC

After I installed my TC. I've been draining and filling the trans when I change my oil. I change my oil every 3 mo. or 3000 miles, whichever comes first. Bellieve it or not the trans service the dealer sells us can be easily done by any diy. Because thats basically what they do . You just need a new trans pan drain plug gasket, and no more than 3 qts of type 4 fluid(t-IV). Just my $0.02 guys. Hope this helps ya'll.
