dual exhaust
Has anyone run a dual exhaust on their IS yet? I was doing some searching and found a Europe exhaust fab shop that does that type of work on IS200's so I know this is possible. I just stuck my head under my car and each side has basically the same amount of room minus that little plate on the drivers side and the need for a heat shield on the drivers side of the spare tire tub, oh and the removal of the tow ring.
ANYWAYS..... has anyone seen this done? second question... does anyone know of a company that builds a dual exhaust rear bumper?
thanks

i don't know who in the US has it, but yes it can be done. however the spacing between the pessenger and the driver side are way off. there are A LOT less space on the driver side for a muffler. so the muffler for the driver side would have to be a lot smaller than the pessenger side
I've seen a couple done before in person. Inquire on is300.net. There are a handful of guys that have done it. From what i've seen alot of the rear bumpers were modified to fit the 2nd exhaust tip.
I sent a message to Rod Millen just now to inquire as to the feasablility of using the same setup that he they used in the is430 in a regular is300.
Most of my mechanical experience prior to owning this car has been with V8's. So my biggest concern in setting up this car with duals is backpressure. There is a fine line between too small and too big. Too small and a person runs into the issue of not letting the engine breath. Too large and you don't get the scavenging or pull from your cyclinders, thus reducing performance in both cases.
Thanks for the posts, that's why I love this site (and my wife hates it) too much info and not enough money to spend on the "needs". Of course she calls my "needs", "wants"... It's crazy how I can validate the "need" for things I want.
Back in the late 80's my dad put a full body kit (plus this HUGE whale tale) on a 84' mustang we picked up from a police auction (it was a state police car with a blown motor). This kit had dual exhaust cuts on each side of the bumper, but my dad opted not to go with dual exhausts. Being the resourceful and innovative guy he is, he bought two chrome tips to match the two coming out the other side and fab'd a bracket to hold them in place. It still makes me laugh to this day. The guy put a lot of money into this car and he put two chrome tips sticking out the drivers side bumper. It was real obvious when he'd start the car on cold mornings and the condensation would only burn out the one side.. looked like he had bad rings on the passenger bank of his engine.
Anyway.. thanks for the info, I will continue my search and keep you posted on my finds. In the mean time I will check the local body shop to see what the price would be to modify my stock bumper to have matching cuts on each side.

i can tell you what the local muffler shop did for redlex's dual blitz nur spec.
from stock header:
custom y-pipe (turned into an X pipe, no resonator)
custom piping where the resonator pipe would be (smaller diameter)
custom mounted exhaust canisters
allegedly, the smaller piping will help retain some pressure, since there are two pipes... this is according to the exhaust shop
if you want a quad exhaust, you should remember that TTE has one designed for our car.

I've got an appointment at the local muffler shop tomorrow @ 1:00 to see what I'm getting into. I've got a call out to a body shop to see what it will cost for another exhaust cut out to match the existing one, hopefully I will hear back from them shortly. That's one of my downfalls, if someone I call for an estimate or a question says they will get back to me by the end of business day and they don't, I will usually mark them off for a "no-go-to" shop. I hate when a shop doesn't follow through on a simple phone call. I associate that trait with a shop that will be hard to deal with.
Anyways, I need to find out if the Borla can work on the otherside at all. Not knowing what they look like or how the inlet and outlet is situated makes it rather hard to know if they are the mufflers I should be looking at. Just another question that will be marked down in my quest.

thanks for all the responses.

yeah, the downside of just putting a dual is the back pressure. i don't think the i6 in our car can really use that extra muffler yet. by putting a narrow mid pipe you can probably retain some pressure i suppose.
but it's kinda funny though. from the header, go to a y pipe, and then cross pipe, then to dual muffler? what's the point of the cross pipe here? i understand the cross pipe for power on v8 cars where there are two headers outlet, but in this case?

ya, there is a lot of ???'s down that pipe. Given that I have a pretty simple mind I can see where I would have done it differently.
I talked with Borla, The muffler that I would need is in the "pro-excess" line. Which if I got the info from this guy "richard" correct I can go with two different offsets plus center (total of three) for the inlet side and three different outlets (left/right or center offset). My muffler shop just needs to order the correct ones. (bet they don't do it right the first time too)
Anyway... no call from the bodyshop... no supprise there... I will try another tomorrow

I'm thinking of maybe having the body shop close up the rear passenger side exhaust cut out, run the pipes down and out each side right infront of the rear wheels. Two cherry bombs and exit..... lololol.. kidding...

(haha which is now listed as a violation in the California Vehicle Code book btw)

also i am not POSITIVE that this is the setup. just what i remember from the top of my head...
I searched IS300.net for the post on dual exhaust. There are mulitple post on it, but redlex did post pics of his set up. Looks like he just had a y-pipe installed just behind the rear axle area and routed each pipe to the appropriate side. Looks simple enough. He has different tastes for exhausts than I do but the work is very nice and results, torque wise, was all top end.
They (the folks living at IS300.net), I believe are correct on this fact. The GS300 which came with a dual exhaust only has a few more HP to the wheels than the single piped IS300. So for this modification to be worth while, the person doing it would have to looking for more of a cosmetic appeal rather than any sort of performance gain.
And that person will be me.
After the muffler shop appointment this afternoon I will know the cost of their end of the deal. The Borlas can be purchased for just over 5 bills each. And I will probably swing by personally to a body shop on the way home from the muffler appointment to find out what the modification to the bumper would cost.
The other web page had some defunc'd links to pages for body kits that had dual exhaust outlets already on them, but the links were dead. I think I'd be better off just getting the stock bumper modified to keep all the lines the same.

yeah putting a y pipe around the rear axle area for dual muffler is probably the easiest solution. otherwise if you want to do it like the gs3, that would be way ahead right after the cat. probably give you more gain, but also more work
