dyno baseline
 

well everyone I got the dyno results on my basically stock 1998 GS400 with KN filter 129,000 miles and original spark plugs. got 249 hp at the wheels not bad. had a hint of spark knock from the plugs being old. also has homemade ram air?? all I know is I walked down a new 430 from 70 to 100 who though he was gonna do a fly by! Well now time for those headers, touque converter and SC unit!

Anyone else who did a baseline? is this about normal numbers?

That's pretty strong dyno for stock (home made ram air must be working)! It's winter too, which helps w / cooler air a little.

From what I recall, stock dynos are 240- 245 on average.

:thumbup: That is a good HP for an essentially stock GS. What about the Torque? Where did you get your dyno done? In or around Roseville? Numbers will vary by dyno and there are many variables that can affect runs on the same dyno, including how the run was performed. Also would be interested in seeing the graph as peak HP is sometimes mistakenly read off the spike during gear changes. If you are interested and close by, the Norcal group will be hitting a dyno soon, look for details in the Norcal Forum. We also hit the Sacramento Raceway once or twice a year to get a real feel for how our mods are working.

I just moved and I'm looking for the dyno sheet for the torque. I remember the HP was read
by actually holding the car in one gear so there was to shift spike reading. Otherwise will
get back when I find the dyno sheet.

If you can recall any more details about how the runs were performed that would be great. As mentioned, we are getting ready to dyno several cars and modifications in late February and it would be nice to establish a bit of consistency. Even better, you could join us so we can compare you numbers on this particular dyno.

as for how it was dynoed... we did a few simpe baselines for tach and dyno and engine warm up. then three seperate pulls starting from around 3000 rpm because we did not want the tranny to downshift.
still lookin for the@%$@$% printout.. moving what fun!

yeah would love to dyno with you guys. This one hooks right to the axles so it works real easy and is suppose to be very accurate. weather was a coo 60ish degrees which helps.

98 gs 400 vs all other gs400/430s
 

i just read dyno and his 98 gs400 had some strong #s. when i compare the performance of my 98gs 400 to my 2001gs430 i am convinced that the 98 is a stronger faster car. were these cars detuned after 98 is the 430 engine just slower is it the transmission , the 98 has eshift the 2001 does not

i heard that motorsport dynamic dyno setup always gives a higher output since the dyno is attached to the wheels versus the standards.

We (redgs4, myself & others) dynoed our cars last summer and our HP #s were significantly lower than what you got. In the case of my car, I have almost every standard performance mod employed on my car (outside of FI) and I dynoed probably about 20HP less than your reported #s.

Some of the factors that I believed contributed to the differences are:

1. We did it in the summer, you did it during cooler ambient temps.
2. There were some issues about the shop that I personally felt did not optimized the way in which they ran our cars. I won't get into detail, in the interest of time, but let's say that all our Torque readings were significantly less than what is reported for a stock GS by the various magazine publications.
3.As Gsing430 has just mentioned, there are differences between various dyno equipment.

I would really like to see you participate in the dyno / meet at the end of this month. The measurements you obtain will be of great interest to many of us. With people dynoing thier cars throughout the country, it would be quite informative for us to see how different types of dyno measuring equipment affect how HP / TQ is measured and reported.

Agree with Dave and red, those are above average numbers .

Here’s a few more additions to the GS4 RWH database. These go back to August of 2002 but were all were run on the same dyno and the same prep crew. There were several stock GS4’s and they ran from 230 to 240. The modded ones (SRT, exhaust, etc. – no FI) ran from 240 to 246. It was HOT (August in North Texas) that day and that hurt us some. These were part of a CL meet in Forth Worth at Powerhouse Racing.

I'd expect a stock GS4 to be in the 240-242 area.
