Possible solution to turbo fitting 400's
 

Howdy folks,

I was thumbing thru doing some research about another project and I ran across this:

It seems they have figured out how to remote mount a turbo system. From the looks of it, they remote mount the system away from the engine bay all together. That means they would not need a turbo manifold either. I haven't read all thru it yet to figure out how they are powering the turbo itself since it's so far from the manifold. It seems like it could work for someone, eventhough it looks like it's an easier fit to trucks. They do have a kit listed for unibody cars like the Firebirds/Camaros, so If they can do it maybe we can too.

The price seems very attractive...$3k.

the only thing that i see preventing something like this for the GS is the fact
that our cars have very limited ground clearance.

in addition, even if we were able to extend out a turbo manifold for a turbo...
there isn't much room around the transmission tunnel or driveshaft tunnel
to fit a decent sized turbo.

someone should try cutting out the front fenders... welding up
a tube frame front... and have each turbo sitting where the front
suspension is. :D

another thing that boggles my mind on the remote turbo setup is
the amount of pressure loss due the length of intercooler piping.

I just spoke with Rick at STS. He is very helpful and did state that while there is no current "bolt-on" system made for the GS, he would be more than happy to help me with getting a system together for the GS4. I will keep in contact with him about this and will keep you folks updated on my progress. Guess I know what I will get for christmas. I think this would work awesomely with the proposed headers that JBrady is trying to get out.

speaking with Rick, I asked him specifically about clearance. He did state that there needs to have some clearance but if you look at the Camaro LT-1 kit, you will see that even small clearances are ok. As for the pressure or loss of pressure, it seems that they use a very good turbo so that it spools quickly and efficiently below 3k, the site also states full boost at 3k. Loss of pressure should be negligible if the hard piping isn't to long. You won't need an intercooler for this at this point since the gas going back to the intake should be much cooler due to the remote location as compared to a tradtionally placed turbo.

I agree. Clearance is going to be the big problem to work out. If they can figure it out for a LT1, I'm sure that they can do it for ours.

It just sounded interesting to me.

BTW, reading thru the FAQ's section will give a lot of info about this.
