Default Driveshaft length

I'm planning to get my driveshaft from my auto extended to fit with my W58 tripod in my 97. I don't have the transmission in the car, and I'm hoping not to have put it in to get my measurements. I'd like to have the shop working on the shaft while I'm doing other things to the car and have it ready when I'm ready for it.

I found a couple of threads where Kahn explained that to convert an auto shaft to fit a R154, the front of the shaft needs to be extended by 50mm or about 1.96". I'm not using the R, and I don't know if the R and W are the same length. I found info online saying that they are the same, but that was not specific to the tripod style.

On Rockauto, the OEM measurements are 50.75" for the auto, and 53.25" for the manual. A difference of 2.5".

To add to my confusion, I found an old forum post on here stating that the yolks aren't the same on the W58 to the R154, which, by extension, would imply that the W58 is different than the auto yolk. But this, like so much other information I'm finding, it just a decade-old post with someone making a comment. I don't know if it's true or not.

Does anyone know how much I should get it extended by? I could just YOLO it and go with the 2.5", but that's a lot of money to YOLO.

If anyone's looking on here in the future, this is a moot point. The W58 has a 21 spline output shaft, while the R154 and the automatic are 23, so I can't just extend my existing auto drive shaft for the W58. I'll have to get an entire new shaft, or at least the front half.

I can't get into a long post right now but in short, the measurements I was giving for R154 front driveshaft solutions will not be the same for a W58 SC300/MKIV front driveshaft as you suspected. I don't know those measurements offhand.

And yes, the splines are completely different between the W58 and R154. It is just a very convenient coincidence to help us as hobbyists that the SC300 Auto front driveshaft has the same spline design that an R154 takes.... but at the wrong barrel length (which needs modification).

I don't know of any equivalent go-to driveshaft that can be modified to fit a W58. You'll just need to find a W58 front driveshaft.

Now a W58 front driveshaft from a Supra MKIII or MKII will probably fit at the splines... but you'd also need exact length measurements to know *precisely* how much length to add or subtract to get one of those to fit our SC's (or an MKIV NA).
