Ticking sound from SC400 distributor cap lead to this
Hey guys, this is my first post over here and my first lexus. I'm usually more on the E46 forum. Anyways, I picked up a really cheap SC400 to fix up. It needed a fuel pump and everything was fine for a bit. Then I lost all power and got a ticking sound from the right distributor cap. I also discovered that I was getting shocked by the screws that hold it in, so I knew something was wrong there. Took it apart and this happened...
As you can see things are pretty messed up in there. I'm pretty sure a good bit of plastic fell into the timing belt cover.
Is that terrible enough that I should take it out and clean it up or will it be ok since its dry? Also how would this even happen?
At least now I know this is clearly the source of ticking sound..
It not out of the question that those are the original caps and rotors. My best guess; The rotor may have become brittle and had a piece break off. Once anything is in there it will contact the spinning rotor and lead to further self destruction.
I'd take the timing cover off and get those bits out of there, imagine them contacting and wearing on the timing belt.
