How To Disconnect Wiring Harness Plugs
Hi Guys, I'm new here and I'll remember to introduce myself on another post soon! Recently picked up a 1992 SC400. It doesn't start due to a short circuit causing a fuse to blow.
My next step in isolating the short circuit is to do tests on the pins of the 'IJ1' connector in the passenger foot well, but I've been at it all morning and I can't figure out how the hell to disconnect the connectors.
I attached images of connectors that all have similar release mechanisms to IJ1, the dark gray one is IJ1. These connectors don't have the same push to release mechanism as the others, and the protruding part is actually a part of the female side of the connector (the part that we see). I've tried inserting a screwdriver but I can't seem to find any clip I can push on. Anyone have experience taking these apart?
Thanks, any help is appreciated!

Most, if not all of the connectors are 'push in to release". Go to the auto parts and get yourself a hook tool in order to press the release tab. apply a squirt of WD40 and pull like heck. Use dielectric grease on the outside of the removed plug so you can get apart in the future. Also, the ignition plugs that I have pulled apart 'pull to release' tabs'. The hook tool is indispensable for these types.

^^ I think he's gone at this point Joe. The thread was bumped by someone looking for info on their 2nd gen IS.
Your wiggling trick for the connectors is good. I'll add that for the stubborn ones I use a small but strong necked flat head screwdriver or metal trim panel picking tool to push down the tab while at the same time wiggling and pulling on a connector. I never rush it or do it in anger for fear I might break something but having a tool to press down on a connector's locking tab while pulling it out makes all the difference.
