Default Transmission problem: car won't get into gear

I tried driving my car the other day after not driving it for over a month. It started slowly as I suspect the battery was undercharged. The car would engage in Reverse but not in Drive. It felt like it was stuck in Park. Stepping on the gas revved the engine (while in Drive) but no movement. I finally was able to get it to move forward in the lowest gear. The other gears finally engaged and the car seemed to drive okay after that.

Is is this an mechanical problem (transmission) or an electrical one? BTW, my car is a stock 2000 SC400 automatic with 140k miles. Thanks in advance for any advice or help you can offer.

Did you check the transmission fluid level?

I had an instance in my SC where it would involuntarily drop out of gear. Fluid level was low. Topped it off and all was well
