Default 1998 SC400 5-speed won't select 2nd or low

A few months ago my 1998 SC400 with A650E started not always lighting up when selecting "L" with the gear selector. Then it got a bit more common, then 2nd started being a bit flaky as well. 2nd isn't so much a problem as when it gets below 3rd and neither 2nd or L are lit, it seems to assume 2nd and operate as such, even with no indicators lit. Now, it's fairly rare for either to select even with flipping the gear selector back and forth and up to higher gears and back.

To be clear, the transmission otherwise operates fine. Automatic shifts are OK all through all gears, kick-down works fine, "snow" mode works as it should. It just won't select 2nd or low.

I'm assuming a switch failure, but have no idea where it is. If it's in the console shifter assembly, I guess that'd be great since it's easy to get to, but I don't want to take it apart just to find out it's inside the transmission. Does anyone know if it's common that the switch wears out, or do they often need cleaning or a rod/cable adjustment? Something else?

I just don't know what it looks like and haven't found any other matches to my problem (like I said, the transmission shifts itself fine and most of the stuff I was finding was internal transmission shifting issues.)
