Default W58 on 1uz questions

Okay so I found a w58 from an 87 supra that the guy is selling to me for $100. I have a 95 sc400. I know they made a couple of different ones so I was wondering if this is a good buy. Right now I am putting a new motor in the car so I am far from doing the swap right now but ****, it is $100!!! Thoughts would be appreciated.

It's not terrible, if you're staying na it'll be fine. Might want to send the shifter out to be stretched a bit but it'll work. Also, just wanted to make sure you're aware that you'll need an adapter kit and all that to make it work. If you plan on boosting your 1uz, you'll want to ditch the w58 idea just cause it'll lunch itself at anything more than low boost. For $100 though, it's a hard deal to pass up

Btalley, I don't recommend the MKIII W58 for your car. Too much work to adapt it to the car considering how weak it is compared to the SC300 W58 and MKIV Supra W58 both of which bolt right in apart from the 1UZ adapter kit and cutting a shifter hole in your transmission tunnel.

The work required is basically all the same things needed to adapt an MKIII R154 to an SC.... but with none of the added strength benefits.

The MKIII W58's are better suited to MKIII Supras, MKII Supras, MKI Celica-Supras, Cressidas and possibly Coronas.

this swap works on sc400, but you may want to keep somethings in mind. Take it from me cause I had an mk3 w58 in my sc400. You're going to need some sort of way to mount the trans. Either the drift motion mount adapter for r154 or some sort of r154 crossmember for SC. Also like someone else mentions, the shifter that comes with it and the shifter housing will be way too far forward. I might be able to make it work with some sort of swan neck shifter the the w58 cubespeed shifter on eBay, but even then it can't won't reach with the original center console and shifter trim. I drove around with mine with the console out and ended up getting another sc300 w58 to swap in cause the mk3 one had destroyed bearings. It won't throw won't make the car run any differently, however the transmission o/d light will flash and there's no at to really get rid of it lol
