Default 1UZFE cam seals - 1995 - NOT VVTI

I had trouble installing new cam seals last weekend. Lubed'em, drove'em in nice and straight and everything was going fine up until about half way in. They were really tight on the outer section and as I kept driving them in they tore. Anyway, a pair of replacements arrived today and I'd like to not damage these. So, is there a trick to getting them in without damage? I came across one post that suggests loosening the front cam cap/saddle and then installing the seals. It appears as thought the valve covers would have to come off for that to work as they go up and over the cam cap/saddle. Who's done their cam seals? What was your method?

Take off the valve cover and loosen the cam cap.
