APEXi Neo question

APEXi Neo question
I received my [used] APEXi Neo today, to go with my recently CL-acquired [new] AEM Wideband. While I'm getting up to speed on all the little details, I figure it would be good to fire the Neo up prior to wiring it in, and make sure it works as promised. Is it possible to run it off of battery power? I didn't have any luck finding that, since my searches kept bringing up stuff about wiring it to the vehicle's battery power.
I guess I'll be the guinea pig for the long-unanswered question of whether the ECU relearn issue fighting the APEXi applies to all years or only OBD2. I'm hoping to achieve a moderate tune for improved performance and efficiency -- supposedly both doable because of how rich the SC400 runs from the factory -- but nothing too extreme and just N/A.
I assume the chart I would follow from the manual is T8−a (Soarer '94.1-‘95.4), but it could be T7−a (‘91.5-‘93.12)?
BTW, is APEXi just pronounced "apex," with the "i" (for Integrated) silent?
