Default Help with AC compressor and clutch.

I was driving down the road about 2 weeks ago with the ac on and the control unit suddenly went black on me. the whole unit died. no air at all coming. replaced fused n still didnt work...... Then just recently my car starting making that whining ac compressor noise. I went to the shop and the guy says its gonna cost $1,200 to replace!?!?!??! Does that sound outrageous or what? I'm probably gonna replace it myself but... what is the typical cost on an ac compressor? what should I be looking at for labor and ac compressor? I have a 96 sc300 jdm 2jzgte aristo.

Always get the breakdown on parts and labor so you can do your homework and see if it's a legit cost. $1200 seems pretty high, but if they're buying factory parts and assigning their own mark-up...

I've seen used compressors for $100+, but I haven't looked at them closely, nor have I looked into the amount of work needed to replace it.
