Default Noob Engine Swap Question...

Can you swap a non VVTI 2JZ engine into a 1998 SC300 that came with a VVTI 2JZ from the factory? I searched everywhere and didn't find any relevant threads. Maybe I'm just using the wrong key words because surely someone else has wondered this.

Welcome to the forum.

I assume you are referring to a 2jzGTE non vvti . Short answer is YES .

My question to you is do you live in a place where you need emission tests ? If yes , you will need to use the USDM Supra 2JZGTE drivetrain.

Sorry, I should have specified, but I'm actually wondering about just replacing the stock 2JZGE. Luckily I just moved to Florida, so no emissions testing.

If you are just replacing the short block , then the non vvti is actually better . It has better rods. I will keep the vvti if I were you .

The problem with replacing the longblock is you will need to modify a part of your wiring . But if it is only the short block you are replacing because you have a bad short block... not much to change.

Thanks for the fast reply. The reason why I ask is because it seems to be a lot easier to find non VVTI 2JZGE engines than the VVTI ones. I want to buy a spare engine to mess with but I want to make sure it's a complete bolt in swap. So you're saying I can get a non VVTI engine, and then put the top end of my engine onto the bottom end of that engine? Lastly, what about JDM GEs? What, if anything, needs to be changed to use one in a VVTI SC300?

Sorry for all of the questions but I'm just trying to see which engines I can use. If you know of any threads that talk about this I would be glad to read those as well.

.
you can install your top end on any USDM or JDM short block and you don't have anything to change . The most will be a fitting or line for your vvti solenoid oil supply. The older non vvti blocks do not have the same size of hole just like the vvti blocks.
