Default Judge my turbo: Haters invited!

So I'm about to get my large deposit back from the house I'm renting and I'll be moving into my new place complete with massive 1400 sq/ft pole barn.. This should kick off the official start to a wonderful build!

I'm tossing and turning over the idea of a new turbo or getting some new seats for my car as they are desperately needed. My seats are torn and make the car look like utter crap. Everything else is super nice, sans seats...

Anyway, seats or turbo. Target turbo to buy in place of current: Borg Warner S366 .91 A/R Twin Scroll. (My future target goals are anything north of 600)

Current turbo: Garret GT30 with GT40 Internals, .60 A/R, running at 8-10psi

Engine: 1JZGTE, Supra fuel pump, front mount, stock internals.

My current turbo is the one I need rated or hated. It was on the car when I bought it and I know basically nothing of it other than it doesn't really come on strong and seems super laggy. I have no idea how laggy because my tach ceases to work (my car is an auto) but I feel it is laggier than it should be. I've watched the previous owner build a handful of cars and he is very hit or miss on the quality of parts he uses. Unsure if this was just slapped in there to go single or if it was put on with intentions. Either way, the turbo seems healthy, no shaft play, doesn't smoke, etc...

Do I need to ditch this pile? Not even sure if it's good or not or how much of a difference I'll notice with the BW (Whenever I get it) on the same boost levels. I'll obviously run more later, but when it gets first bolted on, I want to see and feel some differences!

Back to the GT30/40.. I need someone to cut it down or hype it up... I unfortunately have nothing to compare it to because I've never ridden in another turbo SC and my other turbo cars have been 4 cylinders.. No one around me has a turbo 6 either, just a bunch of fast spooling 4's!

Thanks for the rate and hate!

Shane

GT30 with GT40 internals??? That would explain why it's laggy....

No experience with GT40's shoehorned into a GT30 however.

Is this turbo any good though? Or am I just wayyy better off swapping out for the BW S366?

They work great, you will not be disappointed..

If it was my car I would do the S363, make plenty of power and still spool fast.

600 on what type of fuel? remember this is a 2.5L you won't be able to make 600 on pump..

Yes they spool really fast.....I have mine on a 2jzgte and i can hear the turbo start to come on around 2800 rpm....and it hits full boost by 4500rpm......I am very consevative at this point with only 12 psi...

I kno....Just wanted to give an idea....it may take more rpm for 1jz to spool because of 0.5 liter less of displacement

Why not spend the cash on decent fuel setup and management and actually see what the garret will do? 8-10 psi is probably not in its efficiency range. Why runnin so low of boost?

I never take the car out much and I've never turned the boost up. Not even sure the manual boost controller on the car even works? Not to mention I'll hit boost/fuel cut, so I wouldn't be able to get out of it what I wanted to.

I've actually just made the executive decision to pick up a 2jzgte block and everything to do a 1.5jz swap on the car . Things should be getting fun now. Got lucky and found a local block with everything for a great price.

I also plan to run E85, but to get things going and to keep it conservative until I can get everything proper, it will be on pump.

I'd say spend it on something you haven't touched already. It already has the turbo, so work on something else like the seats you mentioned.

Yeah, I agree with the other guys saying to upgrade the other parts. Better fuel system, Haltech standalone, injectors and a damn good tune. You even said that you don't know if certain parts work. Go to a very reputable shop and have the car looked through. Then start ordering parts. I have a guy in town with a very clean built MKIV Supra and hated the BW S366. There's my two cents. Good luck with the build.
