Default What causes the Ignition Coil to fail?

So, I personally haven't been a victim of a faulty ignition coil yet. Both sides are still working fine.
I know that Ali started a thread awhile back for a coil failure poll, but I'm still interested and wondering exactly why the ignition coils fail. Usually age, one might think. Of course, parts wear over time and stuff doesnt last 10 years much less 20. But we still haven't figured out why the drivers side coil fails more often than the passengers side.

Is it due to the fact that the drivers side coil is closer to the exhaust manifold, then fails earlier because it has to negotiate with the constant heat radiating from the manifold?

Is it due to "resistance" issues within the spark plugs and/or wires?
