Default Bone stock r154 clutch limits

Will a bone stock r154 clutch support a bpu 1jz? I am debating using my good stock clutch because I already have it, and I am a huge fan of not using more clutch than is needed. My short range plans are to go bpu and drive the car while I gather parts to go single and standalone. Then, I want to pull the r154 and do marlin crawler internals, put enough clutch in it to support single power and never look back.

Anyhow, will the stock clutch support bpu power or no?

Tia

stockhatch, I can't give you firsthand opinions on these clutches against a turbo engine. Quicksc4 above will be able to answer that. Here is what I can tell you:

I just had an R154 fully rebuilt with Marlin Crawler parts (and the DM 3-4 fork) and installed with the OEM 7MGTE clutch. I believe the disc is the same since the 7M design but I have seen various revisions in the Toyota parts database.

It should handle 1JZ stock boost at least. I'm still NA so I can only tell you what I know from research. Driftmotion claims it's good for 350 crank horsepower while the shop I just used for the rebuild+install suggested that when I swap in a 2JZGTE I should go with the RPS Stage 1 organic face clutch (but *nothing* else at all from RPS). Their opinion was that the pressure plate became the weak point at BPU and not the disc itself. Beyond BPU and the the disc would be inadequate as well. Seems like a no-brainer to change both at the same time though...

From what I can tell so far you can probably do it but BPU is the absolute limit and it's a question as to how long that will last. The OEM R154 clutch was technically designed for 230hp initially but was perfectly good to sell to customers with 280hp engines. For how long probably depends on how you drive it.

I can tell you the pedal action is very, very easy and light. I'll probably change mine to an RPS Stg1 or Exedy twin-plate when the time comes.

Thanks for the input guys. It sounds like the stocker may be marginal for BPU, so I think I am going to go ahead with the southbend street disk. I plan to try the SB disk with a 100% stock PP and see how it holds up.

Southbend said they could upgrade the stock pressure plate to whatever power level you choose for $150. Just an FYI

Yes, thanks. I did speak to southbend and they told me pretty much the same thing. Even so, I am curious what a stock pp will hold, so I am going to give it a shot.

the idea of using a stock pressure plate and a slightly upgraded disc makes me want to throw my w58 and extreme pressure plate in the closest dumpster and go r154. good luck it sounds like it should work out nicely!

Haha I know! You have been dealing with that clutch for many years Ali. If you get rid of your extreme PP your left leg will shrivel away to nothing. You should keep your current setup to stay in shape.

Best Combo for under 470wtq.

My car held 17psi rock solid on E85, 10.1 CR and S366 with a Stock PP and SB feramic Disc.

Another setup was Stock PP with ACT disc holds 24 psi on GT4202, Because that 74mm doesn't make enough TQ on Pump gas to make the clutch slip .

The best One is the SB Feramic Disc with the Stock PP.

Ali- your clutch reminds me to my old act days lol.

thats funny, it will keep the left leg in shape so I will have to mash the gas to work out the right one then =)
I think I am inspired to finally do a clutch job myself and change it out. I don't even like to drive it anymore.
I keep waiting for something to break but my w58 still feels strong.
Quick yeah I am still stuck there, they should put a warning label on this pressure plate and disc setup.

If you really wanna break it , i will let you borrow my wheels and tires haha..

ACT suck... for real , I wouldn't put one on my lawnmower.. I see people still run them..I used to put that $h&* on everything .
Now i wouldn't put it on my car even if they pay me.

^I was thinking about Southbend Pressure Plate and ACT extreme clutch disc. Is there a better disc for $150 that will hold 600hp? SB quoted $350 for their disc alone. I can get the stock PP, modified by SB and a ACT disc for $380.

I just sent my stock pressure plate to southbend and told them to upgrade it to the max pressure that wouldn't cause crank walk. I also purchased a 6 puck ACT disk. Will be road racing at 600 rwhp+.

I know this is old but I have to ask if anyone has updates for this?

I just pulled out my fermaic 6 puck disc with stock pressure plate because it’s now slipping.

on pump was 430whp 435tq on 94 pump gas in Canada and the clutch held up for 5 years this way. I moved to Cali and I converted the car to e85 (mk3 supra) I estimate the car is closer to 475-500 ft tq and was slipping, when I took out the clutch I noticed it was actually already rubbing the rivets so I’m wondering if that was the cause of the slippage of just too much tq for the clutch.

Anwyays, I got a 6 puck ceramic disc which holds a little less powe but upgraded the PP to 2600 Lbs. The stock is around 2000-2200 according to testing that raptor racing did. I know with the cermaic disc combo and higher pressure plate it’s usually rated to like 600ft ya similar to the act extreme.

just wondering if you guys have more info
