Default w58 or r154 for 1uz (possible boost)

Ok, so I've done a decent amount of research. I've seen both sides of the story and it seems to me there is always alot of people that say the w58's hold up pretty darn good. BUT everybody has different driving styles too. And there are people that say the r154 is the way to go.

A friend of mine is about to switch out his w58 out of his mk4 and put in a r154. I can get it for $100. Pretty much everything for the swap is cheaper for the w58 too. Would it be worth my time, money, and effort to go with the w58? I might consider doing a fresh rebuild on it before install just for peace of mind. I do have future plans to do a single turbo setup, but not anything major.

If you saw my sig, yes it's for my LS. I just figured you guys might be more helpful in the SC forum, because the swaps are more common.

So what do you guys think? It would also be easier in general to do the swap with the w58 (IMO)

If you can get the R154 for $100 bucks, near complete, then you would be crazy even not to buy it if you wasn't even going to do the swap. The R154 to me, has longer gears, which I like due to when my boost comes in. This allows to stay in boost longer, before switching gears. The R154 is stronger and will hold up a lot more HP in the long run. If I misread the thread and you are going to buy the W58, even still at a $100 bucks that's a good buy, if it hasn't been punished to death. I would say 400 rwhp is the limit to the transmission, just from the research I have done. GL in your decision.

Buy W58 for $100, sell for $600

Take the profit, go to Vegas and make double your money.

Then buy a R154

Ok tell me the scoop on the horrible W58. That's the vibe I get from almost everybody on here . My 92 SC300 1jzsingle turbo W58 is my first sc with 5 spd. At this point I'm pushing 390 whp at 17 lbs boost n my car is my DD . It shifts just fine ,I may need a clutch next year but you guys scare the s#*t out of me with the W58 bashing my car pulls hard but I'm afraid to even go to the drag strip to test and tune night to see how she really runs in 1/4 but I'm afraid first time I dump the clutch my tranny going to explode . Explain to me why the W58 is trashed n why the R154 ( which if I decide to get more hp out of my 1J I will get ) is soo much better. Thanks for letting me vent

He is taking out the w58 and going with the r154, so that leaves me the w58. It will most likely need a rebuild (reason for pulling in the fisrt place). It still works but sometimes doesn't want to go into gear at higher RPM shifts.

As far as my car goes. Even after boosting it, I'd like to see around 400-450whp. I know the trans would be fine for an n/a setup.

Also the trans is coming out of a right hand drive supra..... Would this leave me with any un-normal issues to deal with doing the swap?

Tabaka - I like your thinking, but I think the plane tickets out there and back would not be worth it.

Flat out, the R154 is a stronger transmission than the W58.
Thats the one you need to get if you plan on going over 400hp
Dont waste your time/money(even if it is only $100) on the W58, you'll regret it later when it breaks

As far as right hand drive, the tranny is the same. Mine came right out of a soarer

Besides gears 1 through 5, the W58 is a great transmission

Seriously. It's not a matter of if. Just when.
The W58 will implode. It doesn't like big laggy topend power. It doesn't like to shift under power. It certainly doesn't like the torque of a 1UZ WITH boost on top of it. Rebuild the W58 with unobtainium if you wish. We will still take bets on how many months it lasts.
