marlin crawler vss or other options for speed sensor?

so I've been reading on google and other forums and i wanted to know if anyone has found another fix for this problem.?

i have 1jz in my sc400 with a 5 speed r154 .

i found this link

http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=30862.0

which pretty much says that the Factory Toyota 1992-95 4cyl Vehicle Speedometer Sensor Assembly works.. has anyone tried that??

and i read that the sensor on the e340 auto trans works.. but haven't found anyone online or any info on any forum that can back that up..

can anyone confirm any of this?? just trying to find other options..

thanks

I can't speak to the recommendation on that forum but I bought a MC VSS for mine. This is mostly because the cost for all the little things add up and I've yet to hear someone complain about it not working.

I think that is the reason most people use the screw-on VSS.

True.. i know driftmotion carries the MC for pretty "cheap" compared to other sites. im just trying to see if there's another way around it..

You could also just buy it from Marlin Crawler directly. Driftmotion is good though. The only other way around this is either finding a used compatible Toyota VSS assembly or buying it new.

the dealer wants over $200 so not an option.. i will be trying one from a toyota 92-95 if i can get my hands on one this week.

i gathered a few year/make/model. will pull some off tomorrow from a pick n pull if you can think of one or have a chance of checking it will be great.

its my wife day off so i didn't have a chance to leave the house or deal with any car stuff. except wash her car and do some work around the house . anyways i have the day off tomorrow so i will be going on a parts run. hopefully i can locate a damn sensor somewhere used..

i didn't see any wires under my car or around the trans.. its a sc400 any idea where i can locate the plug that goes on the trans.. thanks

sorry I know as much about the auto transmission as I know about tire stretching, and that's pretty much not a whole lot at all.

i have issues with mine not working some times. it quits on me mostly after a long drive or a few hard pulls. but I also have an issue with my temp gauge, might not even be the MC VSS, one day ill get under the car and take a look at it

OK, so i finally had a chance to go on a speed sensor hunt and after hours of searching on google and only God knows how many posts and sht i had to read i have found a sensor that works :).
- toyota part # 83181-20040 which is a sensor off a 91-95 toyota privia or a 92-98 toyota land cruiser. i just put mine in. i got it off a 92 previa . (you simply uncrew the top part. i posted a pic below of what it looks like) its plug and play to your stock harness and it works great.. i even drove by a radar on my street and its on spot.. ill post a picture soon as i can of the sensor.. it screws into the stock r154 sensor out of a mk3.

this sensor cost me $2.00 :woot: at picknpull .
heres a picture of what it looks like

i had a problem with my water temp gauge going up once i had a passenger in the car or what not.. it was a ground problem.. once you do the swap you have to ground a wire for the gauge and mine had a bad connection .. this was on my previous car.. the speedo not working could be either a sensor going out or bad connection with the MC if you didn't tighten hard enough the vibration could've loosen it..
