I told a group of tuners I was running a HY35 and they laughed and said HOLSET turbos are terrible. Am I missing something? I ride or die with my hy35 haha or is it time to upgrade ......

Haven't heard of anyone running that turbo on a Supra or SC before. I know they use to be favored somewhat by the DSM and Dodge Crowd.

Vrank ran a He351 I believe on his cressida 1j vvti and also Sc 1j both of which made great power. I believe at one point he was making untuned 420 whp or so. It held up to everything he threw at it. So in my opinion it should be a great turbo. The Hy35 I think is said to be similar to a GT35R in a few ways.

I picked up a blown HY35 for $50 for my 1J. Just ordered a brand new CHRA for $260. $310 for a brand new turbo with a 1 year warranty. They're cheap and easy to rebuild and are very reliable. The HX35's are even cheaper to get a brand new CHRA, but I wanted the smaller turbine for spool.

I will run 18-20psi on pump and in the future may do meth at 23-25. I'm guessing over 400rwhp should be easy on pump gas, which is all I need.

I saw someone NA-T running a Holset. If it works and haven't given you problems, then it's fine. Haters gonna hate. Tell them people your turbo is just getting sick from eating up their cars everytime lol

It´s running fine @0,85bar at the moment.

Terrible would be a pretty ignorant word to use. They're probably one of the best turbos out there in some ways while being a pretty bad match for our motors in others. They're mostly pirated from diesel applications so the hotside/coldside relative sizing does not match up quite as well as an off the shelf turbo from other manufacturers. They're also fairly crude designs and are not that efficient compared to the turbos of the last decade.

However...

Because they come from diesel applications, in many ways Holsets are grossly overbuilt for our purposes. They are one of the few turbos you could legitimately run without a blowoff valve. Diesels don't have them. They were designed to withstand loads on the seals that would make the typical off the shelf turbo cry.(I don't advocate it but in theory you could!) They're also incredibly cheap because of how long they have been made for and how plentiful they are on the US market.

There is nothing 'wrong' with a Holset. For the price of an ebay china turbo (Holset was originally a british company IIRC?) you could have a higher quality but usually mismatched turbo for you JZ. I vote, beat on it until it dies!

^ This is for the most part completely incorrect. Crude is a terrible word for the design, especially considering the flow they put out. I'd wager they were ahead of the curve. Simple may have been a better choice for a word. The commonly used holsets for gasoline engines ( because they are all piraterd from diesels iirc) like the hy/hx35 and he341/351 are perfectly sized for a jz engine, if your goal is a fun quick spooling street car with a goal of 400-500whp. A good buddy of mine did 560whp on a completely stock hx35 at 35psi on e85, built 4g63. I did right at about 400whp at 18psi on a 1j both vvt and non vvt, he341. These things are like 58-60ish mm and have exh housings that equate to .63 to .82. I'd go out on a limb and say that for the average jz enthusiast that these are the perfect turbos

FYI: BW is an OEM product manufacturer for many car,light truck,industrial,marine And engine manufacturers through out the world.

So now that u caved into the pressure from some honda boys now you should just go buy a Precision (percussion) turbo so youll fit in with a bunch of front wheel drive POS!

Buy a BW S366 leave a tiny bit of power on the dyno but gain OE reliability oh wait you just sold that!

But please don't take my advice Cause I'm all new to this Turbo rear wheel drive stuff.
