Is this the ABS sensor on my MKIII R154?

So while cleaning my MKIII R154 today I uncovered this sensor's part number and became curious.
I looked up the module in Carson's system and it reads as P/N: 89544-14020 "SENSOR, SKID CONTROL".

This would be the ABS sensor, correct?

The mechanical speed drive on the other side will be addressed with a Marlin Crawler VSS adaptor coming in this week.

Look at the compatibility #. Looks to be the "Wells ABS wheel speed control".

That looks like the same one. And the price isn't that far off from the Toyota original either. So this definitely is the ABS, then?

So other two-wire sensor on the other side should be the reverse switch.

Based on the part number matching the one for sale, I'd say it is probably the ABS.

5 speed sc3...nice. :)

Thanks, SC400slide :)

I've been very happy with it. The R154 going in precludes an engine swap to keep my options open. I may or may not wait on installing it but I might just put it in with a factory 7MGTE clutch in a couple of months.

I still need the shifter housing and internal rod extended, a short shifter and finally I need to decide on a trans mount solution. I've considered a Marlin Crawler rebuild but their quoted price (parts included) is about $1600 right now. This thing has only 111k miles vesus my original (never boosted) W58 with 216k miles. I think it'll be fine ;)

So is the rear speed sensor needed for the abs to work with the swap? Or can that one just be plugged?

x2

do I need that sensor for abs to work? because on my mk3 r154 its missing - only a blank plate installed in its place...

I didn't see the post in 2014 from Kingblack :/

Edit: I was actually wondering this when I got my R154 a few years back and I can't remember if I needed to plug that sensor in or not. I'm embarrassed to say that I haven't looked at what that cable on my transmission is doing right now, despite the fact that everything is hooked up that needs to be on my SC.

From a quick search I don't feel there is a solid answer to this question but some people are stating the ABS sensor isn't needed when swapping into newer Toyotas like the SC, MKIV or IS. I'm inclined to believe that. From what I gather, since the MKIII R154 (and MKIII W58) had mechanical cable speedo drives, the ABS rear speed sensor was used for the engine computers in those cars. With electronic VSS sensor equipped R154's and W58's, the threads below generally state this sensor connection isn't needed. Once you convert the mechanical speedo drive to a VSS signal with a Marlin Crawler VSS unit you only plug that in and the connector for the reverse sensing switch.

Apparently some MKIII Turbos with R154's had no ABS so I assume that's why in some cases there is no sensor and just a plate there.

I'm still not aware of the status of that ABS wire+connector on my R154 transmission but I'm going to guess it's just not connected. My gearbox was from a 1989 Turbo 5-speed model if that helps.

Here are the threads I just looked up on this:

oh wow thanks for all the info, very appreciated! I guess I will find out if ABS is working when the car is back on the road. If not, I can still fix this later. Maybe I can even switch the part over from the AT Trans, I remember reading somewhere that all the ABS Sensors are the same.
