Default low idle problem

my car threw a 71 code on my check engine light. guy at the shop said i prolly have carbon in my intake valves or something like that. the mechanic said that it wouldnt affect the engine, but now i have an idle problem. sounds like the car is needing more "air". the car still drives fine, but it has problems in idle. do you think having carbon in the intake would give it that low idle problem??
